Project Based learning is a type of learning where students are learning skills and strategies in order to accomplish a bigger project goal. For example, there might be a project where students are making scale models of a created island for a travel agency. By making these students would learn about ratios, distances, map reading, as well as descriptive writing.
Project based learning allows students to be able to thoughtfully reflect on what they already know and what they need to know. It forms a reason for learning and allows for automatic assessment of skills and strategies. It also helps student learn the executive functioning skills necesssary to follow steps and complete work on a timeline.
In class, I take the time to get kids excited about the outcomes and then together we make a project board that shows us what we are going to learn and when. By haveing this board students can keep track of their progress and ask for support. At the end, we always take time to reflect on how the project went and set goals for our next endeavors. Below are some initial plans I have for our first three projects!
