BAND AND CHOIR ARE FULL-YEAR COURSES. PARTICIPATION IN BAND AND CHOIR REQUIRES A TIME COMMITMENT OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL DAY FOR CONCERTS AND OTHER PERFORMANCES.

Band Courses

1840A: Crimson Band A

1840B: Crimson Band B

Grade Level: 9

Prerequisite: Participation in Middle School Band

Course Description: Enrollment in all music ensembles requires a Full-year commitment to the ensemble. The Crimson Band is open to students in 9th grade. The band meets every day and focuses on individual and ensemble sound, music terminology and other musical concepts. The band has several performances throughout the year and students will have the opportunity to perform on regularly scheduled national and/or international tours. All band members are required to take curricular band lessons to develop personal music understanding, appreciation, playing techniques and musicianship. In addition, all students develop their performance skills by playing their instruments in the Trojan Pep Bands. Students also have the ability to participate in several local and regional honor bands and solo and ensemble contests.

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Previous playing experience required.

Course Description: Enrollment in all music ensembles requires a Full-year commitment to the ensemble. A wide variety of music literature will be studied and performed in a major concert each semester. The fundamentals of basic musicianship will be emphasized and expanded upon to more advanced levels of musicianship. The Symphonic Band may represent NPHS at various region band festivals and will have the opportunity to perform on regularly scheduled national and/or international tours. All band members are required to take curricular band lessons to develop personal music understanding, appreciation, playing techniques and musicianship. In addition, all students develop their performance skills by playing their instruments in the Trojan Pep Bands. Students also have the ability to participate in several local and regional honor bands and solo and ensemble contests.

1841A: Wind Ensemble A

1841B: Wind Ensemble B

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Crimson Band and Audition

Course Description: Enrollment in all music ensembles requires a Full-year commitment to the ensemble. A wide variety of music literature will be studied and performed in a major concert each term. The fundamentals of advanced musicianship and ensemble skills will be emphasized throughout the course. This class is a creative environment for musicians to express themselves, support each other in music making endeavors and create meaningful musical experiences. The Wind Ensemble will represent NPHS at conference music festivals and will have the opportunity to perform on regularly scheduled national and/or international tours. All band members are required to take curricular band lessons to develop personal music understanding, appreciation, playing techniques and musicianship. In addition, all students develop their performance skills by playing their instruments in the Trojan Pep Bands. Members of the Wind Ensemble are encouraged to take private lessons on their instrument to ensure advanced playing techniques are mastered. Students also have the ability to participate in several local and regional honor bands, and solo and ensemble contest.

Prerequisite: None

Course Description: Enrollment in all music ensembles requires a full year commitment. Treble Choir is a treble voice ensemble. Admission is open to any treble voiced student in grades 9-12 without an audition. Emphasis will be on preparing students to enter Belles Voix and Concert Choir or singing in college and the community. The focus of this course will be on developing basic vocal techniques, music theory, sight- reading and ear training. Auditions for the upper level choirs are held at the beginning of the second semester of each school year to assure balance and maintain a high standard of excellence.

Course Description: Enrollment in all music ensembles requires a full year commitment. Trojan Choir is a tenor and bass voice choir. Admission is open to any tenor or bass voiced student in grade 9-12 without an audition. Emphasis will be on preparing students to enter Concert Choir or singing in college and the community. The focus of this course will be on developing basic vocal techniques, music theory, sight- reading and ear training. Auditions for Concert Choir are held at the beginning of the second semester of each school year to assure balance and maintain a high standard of excellence.

Prerequisite: Audition

Course Description: Enrollment in all music ensembles requires a full year commitment. Belles Voix is an advanced treble voice ensemble open to treble voices students in grades 10-12. The focus of this course will be on developing proper vocal technique, music theory, sight-reading, and ear training. Emphasis will be on preparing students to sing in college or the community. Auditions for Belles Voix are held at the beginning of the second semester of each school year to assure balance and maintain a high standard of excellence.

1843A: Concert Choir A

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Audition

Course Description: Enrollment in all music ensembles requires a full year commitment. Concert Choir is an advanced mixed choral ensemble. Students will learn to sing within a large ensemble and have the opportunity to go on a tour every other year. The focus of this course will be on developing proper vocal technique, music theory, sight-reading, and ear training. Auditions for Concert Choir are at the beginning of the second semester of each school year to assure balance and maintain a high standard of excellence.

9100: Scene Studies

Prerequisite: None

Credits: 1 - This course fulfills one credit of the NPHS Fine Arts requirement.

Course Description: This course focuses on developing the fundamental skills used in rehearsing and performing stage plays. Through an exploration of various acting techniques, along with textural analysis, students acquire the tools and skills necessary for character development and honest characterization.

9101: Directing

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: None

Credits: 1 - This course fulfills one credit of the NPHS Fine Arts requirement.

Course Description: This course focuses on developing the fundamental skills used in directing stage plays. Students will study improvisation techniques, blocking, a projection of ideas and emotions, building an ensemble, and preparation of scenes. Student directed projects will develop leadership skills, as well as the ability to guide others through constructive criticism.

9103: Scene Studies II

Course Description: This course explores intermediate techniques used in rehearsing and performing stage plays. Students will hone their acting skills through specific improvisational training, in-depth textural analysis of various styles, and advanced acting exercises.
