Dyslexia
Our district Dyslexia practices can be found on page 28 of the MTSS handbook. It is also outlined below with some additional resources.
In accordance with the guidance from MDE in the READ ACT Legislation, Hastings Public Schools has developed a comprehensive plan to screen students for characteristics of dyslexia. It is important to note that although we can screen for characteristics of dyslexia we cannot diagnose a student as having dyslexia. Any diagnoses must be determined through a medical professional.
The screening for characteristics of dyslexia are integrated into our universal screening and student identification process. Students are assessed on foundational reading skills inclusive of phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, fluency and oral language - as noted in our universal screening assessment chart.
K-1 administration of the universal screening subtests in Fastbridge satisfies the requirements of screening for dyslexia.
We will administer the nonsense words to any student performing below grade level.
In grades 2-3 we utilize a gated screening process:
All students who are below grade level benchmark on the CBMreading oral fluency assessment will be administered the nonsense words subtest.
In grade 4 we will utilize a gated screening process:
All students who are below grade level benchmark on aReading + AUTOreading will be administered the Capti ReadBasix Assessment.
