Weekly Learning Recap: Shapes, Emotions & Kindness
What a busy week it’s been in P1! We've been learning all about shapes, emotions. and our school values.
We started the week exploring 3D shapes—cylinder, sphere, cube, cuboid, and cone.
The children enjoyed identifying these shapes in real-life objects, noticing that some shapes can stack (like cubes) while others can roll (like spheres and cylinders). This hands-on exploration helped reinforce the children’s understanding of these shapes in a practical way.
In gymnastics, we worked on balance, dance, and movement. The children practiced travelling through space in different ways, developing their physical coordination and building confidence in their abilities.
Throughout the week, we read a story a day focused on different emotions, which helped the children understand and express their feelings. This led to thoughtful discussions on how emotions affect us and others.
The lazy scarecrow
Scaredy bat
Elephant learns to share
The very hungry worry monster
Tiger has a tantrum
We also consolidated our learning of 2D shapes by creating pictures using only 2D shapes. The children used their imaginations to turn simple shapes into all sorts of fun images—animals, houses, and more!
In literacy, we learned two new sounds: j and v. The children practiced making these sounds with various activities, including forming the letters using magnetic letters and writing on magnetic boards. We also worked on CVC and CVCC words, reinforcing our blending and reading skills
During our reading group time we worked on story sequencing and continued blending sounds in our books. The children did an excellent job of understanding the order of events in stories and blending sounds to read more fluently. Remember to keep reading your book nightly at home.
As part of our Shanarri work, the children worked collaboratively to create posters, drawing pictures that reflect our values. These posters are displayed to help remind us of the importance of being safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included.
During music we listened to and learned 'Ye cannae shove yer granny aff a bus'. We kept the beat using our hands clapping and playing the boom whackers. We performed to Miss MacIsaac and Primary 5 and she was so impressed with our performance and how responsibly we lined up that everyone got 10 house points for their team - thanks Miss MacIsaac!
Finally, we filled cups of kindness with some cvc words and pictures of kind acts to help us learn more about our school value of kindness.
It’s been another wonderful week full of learning and growing. We hope you have a lovely weekend, and we look forward to more exciting adventures next week. Hopefully the sun will keep shining! 🌟😊
Please remember to return your Parent Appointment slips on Monday - much appreciated.
Weekly Learning Recap: A Short But Sweet Week!
It’s been a short but fun-filled week in P1! We kicked things off with a very special treat—Nessie joined us! 🦖
We won Nessie for our excellent listening skills during assembly on Friday. The children had so much fun interacting with her, and it was a great reminder of the importance of being good listeners.
During circle time, we took a moment as a class to reflect on what we liked about having a little February holiday. The children shared their favourite moments and were very thoughtful in their responses.
We also spent time consolidating our letter sounds, focusing on matching small letters to capital letters—a great way to reinforce our literacy skills.
A special moment of the week was celebrating Anna's birthday! 🎉 The children sang, played, and enjoyed making Anna feel extra special.
The children had to do their best with a little assessment to showcase their learning. The task was to create their very own Lego character. They had to...
write their name accurately
make a pattern
draw 6 pictures of things they like and explain each picture
pen/pencil grip was also assessed
finally, the children drew a scribble spot in the centre to show that we all have emotions.
It may have been a short week, but it was packed with fun learning, creativity, and celebrations. Have a wonderful weekend, I'm looking forward to more exciting learning next week! 😊🎉✨
Weekly Learning Recap: Valentines, Emotions & Big Celebrations
What a lovely week we’ve had in P1! From celebrating Valentine’s Day with P1M to exploring emotions and expressing our feelings, there has been so much creativity and learning!
This week we had a special Valentine’s Day celebration. The children worked together to create Bee Mine bees, Love Bugs , and CVC hearts, using their phonics skills to match letters and sounds to create words. We also took inspiration from Kandinsky to create heart patterns using oil pastels.
To continue our emotional exploration, we enjoyed watching Storybots to learn more about feelings and emotions, with a special focus on love for Valentine’s Day. The children engaged in meaningful conversations about what love means and how we can express our feelings in kind ways.
In writing, we focused on love and took time to think about the things we love and why. The children were able to share their favourite things and explain what makes them special. It was wonderful to hear such thoughtful and creative expressions of love from each child.
We also have a very special mention this week! A huge congratulations to Eleanor, who won the Homes of the Future competition for P1! 🎉 Eleanor’s design was creative, sustainable, and colourful—well done!
It’s been a wonderful week filled with creativity, love, and learning. I hope you enjoy talking to your child about all the fun activities and feelings we explored this week. Have a lovely weekend! 💖🎨🏡
Weekly Learning Recap: STEM, Scotland & Emotions
We’ve had an action-packed week full of creativity, problem-solving, and exploring new skills in P1!
A highlight was our STEM workshop with STEM Ambassadors from Transport Scotland, where we worked with Kapla blocks. These sessions helped us develop motor skills, creative thinking, communication, and collaboration—all while having fun! Through trial and error, the children built structures, strengthening their resilience and problem-solving skills, which will serve as valuable building blocks for their future careers.
In numeracy, we continued working with numbers 0-20, with a special focus on counting in 2s and spotting missing numbers on number lines. We also explored money up to 20p, counting coins to find how much in total—a great way to apply our number skills to real-life situations!
As part of our Scotland topic, we learned about Scottish animals, with a special focus on the Highland cow. We looked at the work of Scottish artist Steven Brown and created our own colourful Highland cows using oil pastels. The children loved experimenting with bold colours and different textures!
In Health and Wellbeing, we explored emotions through class discussions and stories, focusing on how our feelings impact ourselves and others. We listened to the stories “I Hate School” and “If You’re Happy and You Know It”, helping us to understand different emotions in more depth and how we can express them in positive ways. We also explored emotions through Scribble Spot (watch here), which encouraged us to turn simple scribbles into imaginative artwork that helped us talk about our feelings!
In literacy, we practiced our CVC words and learned our new sounds l and ll. We used a variety of hands-on activities to reinforce these, including writing, playdough, and sand. As you can see from our photographs we are also now independently reading our own sound books in class that link to our sounds of the week.
It’s been a fantastic week of learning, and we can’t wait to sing our Scribble Spot song again next week! Have a lovely weekend, and as always, I encourage you to chat with your child about their favourite activity! 🎨🔢💡✨
Weekly Learning Recap: Celebrations, Scotland & Super Sentences!
What an exciting and busy week we’ve had in P1! We’ve been celebrating Chinese New Year, exploring Scotland, and building on our literacy and numeracy skills through hands-on activities.
We learned all about Chinese New Year 2025 – the Year of the Snake! The children discovered the importance of red and yellow, the lucky colours of the festival, and practiced using chopsticks to pick up objects—a tricky but fun challenge! We also created beautiful lanterns and snakes.
As part of our Scotland topic, we explored some key Scottish symbols. The children made their own Scottish flags (the Saltire or St Andrew’s Cross) using scrunched tissue paper, practicing their fine motor skills. We also looked at tartan and how it links to our previous learning on patterns and families—identifying different colours and learning about clans.
In numeracy, we focused on counting in 2s, building on our pattern work while also helping us count money using 2p coins. We explored pairs and thought about things that come in twos—like socks, shoes, and gloves!
In literacy, we learned two new sounds: u and r. The children had lots of fun forming these letters using playdough, peg boards, paint, and writing them out. We also worked hard on writing sentences, making sure that the first word started with a capital letter and that we used a full stop at the end. We built sentences using CVC words and the common word ‘a’, helping to reinforce our early writing skills.
It’s been a super week of learning, creativity, and discovery. I encourage you to ask your child about their favourite activity and maybe even challenge them to spot things that come in pairs at home! 🧦🐍✨
Weekly Learning Recap: Teamwork, Learning & Future Thinking!
What a busy and exciting week we’ve had in P1! From designing houses of the future to practicing teamwork and literacy skills, our learning has been full of creativity, cooperation, and fun.
In literacy, we played Dobble, a fun matching game where we linked pictures to our new sounds. We also enjoyed board games with CVC words, where we practiced blending sounds and reading words with a partner. Playing in pairs helped us build teamwork skills, as we took turns, encouraged each other, and learned to follow game rules fairly. The children showed great patience, cooperation, and good sportsmanship—cheering on their friends and helping each other when needed.
In numeracy, we focused on money and coins from 1p to 20p. The children had fun sorting, identifying, and adding different coin values—helping them understand the basics of money in real-life situations.
As we move into Term 3, we took time to revisit our class charter, discussing and agreeing on the rules that help us have a happy and safe learning environment. We also looked at our literacy and numeracy walls to revise all the fantastic learning we’ve done so far!
A special part of our week was celebrating Eleanor’s birthday! 🎉 The children loved joining in the celebrations and making her feel extra special.
We also began an exciting new project for our House of the Future competition! The children designed houses that are sustainable and environmentally friendly, thinking about how we can help take care of our planet. They came up with brilliant ideas, including:
🏡 Solar panels to provide clean energy from the sun
💧 Rainwater collection systems to help conserve water
🌿 Rooftop gardens for growing food and helping wildlife
💨 Wind turbines to generate electricity
🔋 Electric car charging points to reduce pollution
To bring their ideas to life, the children first designed their houses on paper, carefully planning their eco-friendly features. Then, they worked together using construction materials like blocks, tap tap, LEGO, and magnetics to build 3D models of their future homes. It was wonderful to see their creativity and problem-solving skills in action as they worked collaboratively to construct their designs!
I hope you have a great weekend and enjoy chatting with your child about all the exciting things they’ve been doing in class this week! 🌍🏡✨
Weekly Learning Recap: Patterns, Letters & Staying Safe!
This week, P1S have been busy building independence, exploring new skills, and having lots of fun along the way!
We worked on creating patterns using colours, numbers, and shapes—this time with more independence!
The children used peg boards, cubes, and LEGO to design and extend their own patterns, strengthening their problem-solving and sequencing skills as well as fine motor.
In literacy, we focused on the letters Ee and Hh, practicing sounds and recognizing them in words.
We also worked on writing our names, making sure to use a capital letter at the beginning and correct small letters thereafter. It’s been wonderful to see the children taking pride in writing their own names correctly!
We played lots of games to help recognise our own name and other names in our class.
Scottish dancing brought energy and excitement to the week during PE! We learned about a reel (which is fast) and a waltz (which is slow). The children had a great time moving to the music and understanding the difference in tempo. We linked this to maths and music by counting and keeping the beat in order to dance in time. For a reel we counted as high as 8 and for a waltz a pattern of 1-2-3.
A very important part of our learning this week was about feelings, knowing our safe adults, and stranger danger with Jo from Safe Strong and Free. The children discussed how to recognize different emotions, who they can turn to if they need help, and how to stay safe in different situations.
It’s been a fantastic week full of learning and growth in independence! I encourage you to ask your child about their safe adults, new sounds, or even show you some of their new dance moves. 💃🕺✨
Weekly Learning Recap: Patterns, Seasons & Snowy Fun!
This week has been filled with creativity, discovery, and lots of winter excitement! P1S have been busy exploring patterns, practicing early reading skills, and embracing the changing seasons.
One of our key focuses was creating patterns using colours, numbers, and shapes. The children experimented with different sequences, learning how patterns repeat and how they can be found everywhere—from the stripes on a scarf to the rhythm of a song.
We also started a special project to be taken home: designing 2025 seasonal calendars!
As part of this, we learned about the four seasons, discussing what makes each one unique—blossoming flowers in spring, sunny adventures in summer, colourful leaves in autumn, and the chilly beauty of winter. The children illustrated their calendars with multi sensory materials to show the changes in nature.
In literacy, we worked on sound practice and blending CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. The children practiced listening to and identifying sounds in words like "cat," "sun," and "map," helping them develop early reading skills. They are becoming more confident in blending sounds together to form words—an exciting step toward independent reading!
To top it all off, we had the joy of watching the snowfall! The excitement of seeing snowflakes drift down sparked conversations about winter weather, how animals adapt, and, of course, the best snow day activities.
It’s been a great week of hands-on learning and seasonal fun! I hope you enjoy chatting with your child about their discoveries. Maybe they can even show you a pattern they made, sound out a new word, or tell you their favourite thing about winter! ❄️✨
Take a look at what we will be learning this term in Primary 1!
Below are a list of helpful reminders, it would be greatly appreciated if you could have a read over them.
We kindly ask that all children have a pair of indoor shoes to wear inside school. These were returned home at the end of last term - this allowed for parents to have the opportunity to check they remain safe and still fit.
Please could all children take a water bottle to school daily. This is for water only and is not to contain juice.
Homework is issued on a Monday.
P1 homework packs are to be returned daily.
P1 homework packs should be returned on a Friday with homework jotters and reading books.
Our PE days remain as Wednesday and Thursday. Children can come to school dressed for PE on these days.
Please ensure all clothing coming to school is labelled with your child's name.
Lost Property can be found at the school office in the box and on the rail.
Please be reassured that children are encouraged to leave their school jumpers in their tray if they take them off during the school day. This helps to keep them safe and ensure their return to the right person.
This rule also applies for any toys, scarves, gloves etc. We then check all of the trays at the end of the day. Therefore if a school jumper, or other item, does not come home - please check lost property at the school office.
The school newsletter 'Nessie Natter' has a list of important dates for the diary. Please be sure to check these as we have Parents Evening this term and a Class Assembly next term.
A change of spare clothing should be kept in schoolbags if possible to help with any accidents or changes in weather.
If you have borrowed any spare clothing from school we would greatly appreciate it being returned to allow it to help another child.
I hope that you had a joyful and restful Christmas break. It’s been wonderful to welcome you back and hear about the special moments you’ve shared with your families and friends over the festive season.
I would like to say a huge thank you for the thoughtful Christmas presents. Your kindness and generosity truly warmed my heart, and I feel so lucky to be part of such a caring and supportive school community. Please always remember it is present enough just to be your teacher.
As we step into Term 3, I’m thrilled to have everyone back and ready for lots of fun and exciting learning. We have so many wonderful activities planned, and I can’t wait to see smiling faces as we discover and grow throughout the term.
Thank you for your continued support, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s anything I can do to help. Here’s to another fantastic term!
We award a Nessie Knight certificate each week to a child who has wowed us. Mr Connon gives these out during our Friday assembly.
Congratulations to our Nessie Knight winners below!
