Welcome back! We trust that you and your children had a lovely break. We are thrilled to present the Year 6 curriculum newsletter for the autumn term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your children during the second half of the term.
We will be using our core text, The Giver, to write creatively using a range of writing techniques. In a society where conformity and order are strictly maintained, young Jonas is selected to inherit the position of Receiver of Memory. He discovers memories of pain, pleasure, color, and emotions from a time before the community’s Sameness policy. This knowledge reveals the cost of living without true freedom or choice, and Jonas begins to question the society’s rules. His journey ultimately leads him to a difficult decision that could change his life—and his community—forever.
Our learning in maths this half term will focus on fractions and converting units, with a special emphasis on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. We'll explore different strategies to deepen our understanding and apply these skills in a variety of real-world contexts.
This half term, we will learn about Evolution and Inheritance by exploring how living organisms have adapted over time to their environments and how characteristics are passed from one generation to the next. They will investigate inherited traits and acquired adaptations, examining both plants and animals to understand survival mechanisms in diverse habitats. This unit will involve studying natural selection, recognising that offspring show variation and inherit features from their parents, and using evidence such as fossils to explain evolutionary changes in species over long periods.
In Geography, the children will continue learning about the Amazon Rainforest in South America, focusing on the impact of colonisation and the lives of Indigenous groups. They will explore the diverse ecosystems within the rainforest and understand how human activities have influenced the land and cultures over time.
Knowledge Organiser
In Computing, we will be learning to design and make complex programs, using functions and flowcharts to test and debug our code. We will explore how to incorporate user input into a program and create text-based adventures, with a focus on online safety throughout each lesson.
In RE we will be learning about Christian beliefs related to commitment, belonging, and the significance of God's presence during key life events. These events, such as baptism, communion, and confirmation, are celebrated as expressions of faith, while many Christians are also inspired to follow Jesus' teachings through prayer and charitable acts.
In PE, we will be developing our understanding of outdoor and adventurous activities skills. We will be applying different methods of communication to collaborate effectively in teams to succeed in different game situations.
In DT, we will be learning to design and construct sustainable habitats for the rainforest by selecting eco-friendly materials, incorporating renewable energy ideas, and applying precise measurements for durability. Children will use skills like critiquing, refining, and adapting their designs as they work collaboratively to create structures that blend with and support the environment.
In French, the children will begin to learn about clothing while recapping their prior knowledge of colours and verbs. In French, we will learn to recognize and recall numbers from 1-100, including using the correct definite articles and gender for body parts. We will practice these skills through interactive activities such as songs, games, and labeling exercises to reinforce vocabulary and grammar.
In Music, the children will be answering the question "How Does Music Bring Us Together?" The children will also understand the difference between live sounds and digital sounds.
In RSHE, children will learn about managing their emotions through mindfulness, the importance of staying healthy with a good diet, exercise, and sleep, and how technology can affect their health. They will also learn how to prevent illness, the value of resilience, and how to make good habits for health. Additionally, students will explore what to do if they become ill and who can support them, including understanding changes during puberty. Activities and discussions will help them apply these lessons to their lives.
