Welcome back! We trust that you and your children had a fantastic half term and are now rejuvenated and eager to embark on another exciting year of learning. We are thrilled to present the Year 5 curriculum newsletter for the autumn term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your children during the second half of the term.
In English, our core text will be Where the River Runs Gold by Sita Brahmachari. Inspired by this story, children will explore the importance of protecting rivers, wildlife and communities. They will read and discuss the environmental challenges in the story and, as a final outcome, write their own persuasive letters to the government.
In Maths, the children will recap their learning of multiplying numbers by 10, 100, and 1000. They will also begin to look at how to add and subtract using fractions, including reasoning and applying these skills to a range of real-life situations and problem-solving activities.
In Science, the children will explore the question, “Do you agree that all changes of state are irreversible?” To answer this, they will learn about the properties of different materials, how these properties determine their uses, and the difference between reversible and irreversible changes. This topic helps children understand the science behind everyday materials and how they behave in the world around them.
In History, the children will be exploring the question, “Why was Britain a desirable country to invade and conquer?” They will do this by learning about Britain’s early migrants, including the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, and understanding the factors that made the country attractive to settlers and invaders.
In Online Safety, children will learn about online bullying, including its various forms and how to respond safely and responsibly.
In Computing, the children will be developing their digital design skills by learning about vector drawings. They will explore how to use shapes and tools on Google Design to create their own digital images, combining creativity with technical skills.
In RE, the children will be learning about Christianity, with a focus on how Christians celebrate and commemorate the life of Jesus. They will also explore the ways in which Christians show commitment to their faith throughout the year, helping children understand religious practices and their significance in daily life.
In PE, the children will be developing their skills in outdoor and adventurous activities. They will learn to use different methods of communication to collaborate effectively in teams and apply these skills to succeed in a variety of game and challenge situations.
Please note that Year 5's PE days are on Thursday.
In DT, this term the children will be making a Middle Eastern Basbousa cake as part of their food fortnight. They will then move on to applying their previously taught knowledge of forces to design and create a pulley system. The children will have opportunities to develop their practical skills, problem-solving, and creativity throughout these activities.
In French, the children will review their knowledge of the months of the year and learn how to discuss time, hobbies, weather, and the different seasons. This will help them use everyday vocabulary in context and develop their confidence in speaking and understanding French.
In Music, the children will be exploring the question, “How Does Music Bring Us Together?” They will learn about melody and harmony and how these elements can create emotion and connection. The children will also have opportunities to listen, compose, and perform music collaboratively, developing both their musical skills and teamwork.
In RSHE, the children will be learning about what makes a good friend and how to develop positive friendship skills. They will explore how to build and maintain friendships across a range of social situations and contexts. They will also reflect on their own relationships and consider ways to resolve conflicts respectfully.
