Welcome back! We hope that you and your children had a wonderful half term break and are excited to start our Autumn 2 term. We are thrilled to present the Year 1 curriculum newsletter for the second half of our Autumn term, where you can find out about all of the incredible learning opporunities that await your children this term.
This half term our learning will be focusing around our core text 'Island Born'. This half term we are working towards creating a setting description of the Dominican Republic. We will be doing this by using our senses to generate adjectives which describe our home and the Dominican Republic.
In Maths, the children will be learning about addition and subtraction focusing on number bonds and fact families within 10. We will also be learning to recognise, name and sort 2D and 3D shapes and use this knowledge to generate repeating patterns.
Seasonal Changes
In science this half term we are learning about the four seasons within the UK and how the weather changes within these seasons. We will be observing changes in our outdoor environments and identifying what changes animals make in Autumn.
Local History Study
In History, we will be looking at how our community and local area has changed over time. The children will learn about the history of Woolwich and comparing the past and the present. The children will learn about Floella Benjamin and the significance she played in society.
This half term, we will be introduced to programming concepts and algorithms. We will have the opportunity to work with floor robots and programming commands to make them move. We will also look at predicting the outcome of a programme.
Christianity
In RE, we will be learning about the importance of celebrating Christmas within Christianity. We will explore the nativity story and learn why Jesus is an important figure to Christians.
In PE we will be taking part in target games which will include sending and receiving a ball with a partner and practising hitting a target with a bean bag.
Our PE days will be Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Construction
This half term we will be looking at different materials of items we can find in our homes. We will look at the properties of these materials and use them to build our own houses. We will focus on how to join materials and how to add support to make them stronger.
In Music, we will explore rhythm and pitch and how they work together within a range of songs. As we engage with different songs we will be reflecting on how music tells stories about the past.
In RHE, we will be learning about health and wellbeing. We will be reflecting on how we can identify our own feelings and recognise our strengths. We will also look at who in the community can help us stay healthy and what we can do to prevent the spreading of germs.
