The Matrix organisational structure is complex, bringing together teams of people from across the organisation to work collectively on projects based on their capabilities and suitability.
It can be viewed as an ‘add-on’, as it is often used alongside traditional organisational structures for the purpose of project based work and is very rarely used in isolation.
Within a business, the individuals who make up the ‘project team’ could be from a wide variety of departments such as HR, sales, finance, or marketing.
Therefore, the employees involved may have two managers whilst they are involved in the project, their line manager within the department they are usually based and the manager of the project.
These ‘project teams’ could be formed on either a permanent or temporary basis and for a wide variety of reasons such as improving the business’ impact on the local community or to develop a new product.
Essentially, a Matrix organisational structure is hybrid version which brings together the typical departments and structures of a business with the addition of project teams.
