The human body needs three main nutrients to function well: carbohydrates, proteins and lipids (fats and oils). We need nutrients to help our bodies to repair any damage and to keep our metabolism working efficiently. These nutrients are organic chemicals., this means they contain carbon atoms. The carbon atoms are bonded to the atoms of the other elements, including hydrogen and oxygen.
Carbohydrates are simple sugars like glucose and fructose or complex sugars like starch and cellulose. They are in food like pasta and potatoes. They are also in fruit and vegetables like apples and sweetcorn. They help to keep our energy levels the same all the day. this means that we don’t suddenly get too tired or too hyperactive.
Proteins are large molecules: they are amino acids that joined together, Each molecule can contain hundreds or thousands of amino acids. Red meat is a good source of protein but don’t eat it too much: it can increase your cholesterol levels.
People get high cholesterol when they eat too many foods with lipids. The large lipid molecules are made up of fatty acids and glycerol. We know thad foods like salami, sausages and cheese contain lots of fatty acids but did you know that glycerol is in some cakes and biscuits? Processed foods contain lots of hidden chemical compounds that are not always good for use. In the past food did not contain artificial chemicals: people grew their own fruit and vegetables. They also made their own cakes and biscuits
