What is a BMI? A BMI (Body Mass Index) is a number. Doctors use people's age, height and weight to calculate this number. This index is for people 18+.
Let's look at an example: Alex goes to the doctor. The doctor asks Alex some questions: How old are yo? How tall are you? How much do you weight?
The doctor types the numbers into his computer. Alex is 19 years old; he is 182 cm tal; and he weights 70 kg. The doctor tells Alex that is body mass index is 21.13. What does this mean? It means that Alex is a healthy weight for is age ange height.
Numbers are important. For example, Mary is a 19 years old girl. She is 160 cm tall and she weighs 70 kg. Mary’s body mass index is 27.3. Mary is overweight. The sam weight gives different results when we add the other numbers and gender (male/female).
Your BMI is your weight (kg) / height2 (m2). Your BMI helps you to find your healthy weight. Look at these BMI results:
< 18.5 = underweight
18.5 - 25 = healthy weight
25 - 30 = overweight
>30 = obese
For young people under the age of 18 you can check your weight on the BMI categorisation scale. The results are in a percentile range (visit www.calculator.net/bmi-calculator.html)
Remember, it is not only your BMI that is important. It is important that you feel good. Some sportsmen have a very high BMI: they are not overweight, they have a lot of heavy muscle!
Why is your BMI important? It is important because our health is important. It is important to have the right balance of muscle and fat. Doctors tell people to do physical activity for one hour every day. They also tell people to eat fruit and vegetables. Do you do sports? do you eat healthy food? yes? Well done. No? Start today.
