There are some rules to obey when you work on a science theory. We all have diferent ideas and opinions but in a science laboratory we must follow rules.
We do experiments in a controlled environment. We have all the equipment on a workbench. We write all the results from the experiment in a notebook.
There are four steps to a successful theory:
Choose and describe a phenomenon or group of phenomena.
Formulate a hypothesis - predict the result of the experiment.
Use similar hypothesis to try and explain other similar phenomena and to predict the result of other future experiments.
Ask other scientists to test your experiments. They cn do controlled experiments to confirm, or reject, you hypothesis.
When other scientists agree with your hypothesis and your results, you can say that you have a new theory or law of nature. But other scientists at other study center can also say they have a new theory. And then you have to start again, That is the fun of science.
Some of the world's most important scientific theories are the result of many, many wrong experiments.
Today's Complete Theory: Gravity - Key Scientist: Isaac Newton - Previous Theory: The laws of motion and the laws of gravity - Interesting Information: We all say 'what goes up, must come down'
Today's Complete Theory: Relativity - Key Scientist: Albert Einstein - Previous Theory: General relativity and nuclear fission - Interesting Information: The Russel-Einstein manifesto warns governments and other officials about the dangers of nuclear of weapons
Use the scientific method to conduct your own experiment. Make a mini tornado in a bottle
You need:
an empty plastic bottle (with lid)
glitter
water
Instructions:
Fill 3/4 of the bottle with water. Add a little glitter. Put lid on. Turn bottle upside down and spin.
2. What is the law of nature that we can see in this experiment?
