Are you a herbivore or a carnivore? In other words are you a vegetarian or a meat-eater? Humans are omnivores. Omnivores can eat all kinds of fruit and vegetables and meat.
Omnivores are good survivors. That is because we can adapt to change. We also have more food sources to choose from. Bears a great example. When bears are near water, they eat salmon for lunch. No water? No problem. They go in the woods and hunt deer. no deer? No problem: a hungry bear can eat berries for lunch.
Carnivores like lions and polar bear have a more difficult life. These animals eat other animals. Lions run very fast to catch zebras, for example. There is a lot of competition for good food; only fast and skilled predators get lunch. Lions can run at over 80 km per hour when they're hungry!
The blue whale is a very big animal! It is up to 30 meters long. This whale likes krill for lunch. Krill is a small creature similar to shrimp.Blue whales can eat up to 40 million (3600 kg) of krill a day.
Herbivores also need a constant supply of food: plants, herbs, seeds, fruits. Lots of small creatures, like insects, are also herbivores: bees for example. Worker bees drink the nectar from flowers and sometimes fly nearly 10 km a day.
Pandas and gorillas are two examples of strong, powerful mammals that only eat vegetation. An eastern lowland gorilla (Grauer's gorilla) is enormous. It can eat the parts of 104 plant species. An average male, in its natural habitat in the Democratic Republic of Congo, consumes 18kg of vegetation per day.
People are omnivores. Some people choose not to eat meat. These people are vegetarians. Some people also decide not to eat any animal products. These people are called vegans; they do not eat butter, milk or eggs, for example.
Choose one animal domestic or wild) and write a profile on it. Information should include details on habitat and diet.
