How is the Specialist Resource Base accessed?

Pupils are offered a place at the SRC from the Local Authority. Families must apply for a place when their child is in year 6 at primary school. A referral form is sent by the school to the Inclusion Service and a place at the SRC is usually confirmed in the spring term of year 6.

Curriculum

Pupils in the SRC are taught a broad and balanced curriculum in line with mainstream pupils. However they also have access to additional interventions and experiences, some of these are outlined below.

Talkabout –all pupils will benefit from weekly sessions delivered by Mrs Adams. This programme encourages children to talk appropriately. It discusses how to start and end a conversation and how to interpret body language. It is particularly useful for those pupils with ASC.

ELSA – pupils have the opportunity to speak with Mrs Adams during the week through individually timetabled ELSA sessions.

Pupils in the SRC receive 10 extra skills sessions, to develop their literacy and numeracy skills.

Lunchtime

At break time and lunch time, all SRC pupils are invited to stay at the base and participate in a range of clubs such as arts and craft, ICT, Lego and reading.

Pupils go to the canteen 10 minutes before the mainstream pupils. They are accompanied by a member of staff and support is offered when ordering food. Staff remain in the canteen while they are eating and they are accompanied back to the base to attend the lunch time clubs.

For more information about the canteen, visit this page.

Support

Pupils in the SRC are taught in small classes of less than 10 pupils. Occasionally some classes will be combined, and they will be taught with a different year group, e.g. year 7 and 8 will be taught together. However, the numbers are very small and there is an additional member of staff to support the pupils. For most lessons, pupils in the SRC are taught with a staff: pupil ratio of 1: 5.

Extra-curricular visits

SRC pupils attended the Welsh Deaf Rugby Union fun day in October 2019.

Pupils also visit Pyle library, a short walk from the school. The children are accompanied by staff and they use this opportunity to develop road safety skills.

Key stage 4

Pupils in year 10 and 11 have the opportunity to do a range of GCSE and entry level qualifications. Pupils continue to have additional support with English and maths and they also take subjects such as catering, ICT and art.  Due to small class sizes, year 10 and 11 are taught together and are supported by an additional member of staff in all lessons.
