Module 1
In Module 1 , our text is called Freedom by Catherine Johnson. It links to our inquiry of the local area as it based upon the Transatlantic Slave Trade. John Hawkins a founding father of Chatham Dockyard was also involved in the Slave Trade.
We have elicited predicitons about the book and carried out a character analysis on Nathaniel Barratt - the main protaganist.
N.C drawing inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justifying inferences with evidence
predicting what might happen from details stated and implied
We have also looked at unfamiliar words in the text and answered questions about them.
N.C checking that the book makes sense to them, discussing their understanding and exploring the meaning of words in context
Module 2
For the first week, we looked at Remembrance poems. We focused on 'In Flanders Fields' and looked at what made this poem so special. We contrasted this to 'Are you sleeping?' We learnt them and then created our own.
Are You Sleeping? (to the tune of "Frere Jacques")
See the poppies See the poppies
Oh so red Oh so red
Growing on the hillside Growing on the hillside
Soldiers lay dead Soldiers lay dead
We remember We remember
On this day On this day
Soldiers on the hillside Soldiers on the hillside
Far away Far away
In Flanders Fields By John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly.
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead.
Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
NC learn a wider range of poetry by heart
prepare poems and plays to read aloud and to perform, showing understanding through intonation, tone and volume so that the meaning is clear to an audience
We have started reading our text for this module. It is called Where The River Runs Gold by Sita Brahmachari.
It tells the story of two children who have to work for the government pollinating flowers by hand after the world is devastated by a storm. It links to our inquiry as it demonstartes the consequences of the world if they depend on non-renewable sources of energy.
We have made our own predictions from the front cover and begun to collect ideas for description.
NC predicting what might happen from details stated and implied
Module 3
We have been reading Letters from the Lighthouse which is a story of a brother and sister who are evacuated from London due to the damage being inflicted during the Blitz. They are moved to the coast and start discovering the secrets that their new home has.
This story blends really well with our inquiry learning where we are looking at conflict and the impact that it has.
While reading Letters from the Lighthouse, we have been looking at how to identify the meaning of words and phrases in context and to decipher meaning when some words are unknown.
N.C checking that the book makes sense to them, discussing their understanding and exploring the meaning of words in context
We have also been looking at the rich characters within the text and using their words and actions to identify their reactions.
N.C drawing inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justifying inferences with evidence
