Positional Research

Positional research is a systematic approach to finding information for the purpose of defending one side of an academic argument.

Remember that supporting a chosen side on a controversial issue is not only about stating your personal opinion!

Positional research gives you supporting facts, statistics and evidence to support your opinion.

General online searching will not provide the credible, scholarly results you need for this type of writing. Need a review of academic research?

To defend one side of an academic argument, you need to:

  • Confidently assert your position, state the side you are going to defend

  • Respectfully acknowledge the opposing viewpoints

  • Use your research to counter the opposing side of the argument

  • Use your research to support your side of the argument

  • Summarize your argument and restate your position

Remember that you are disagreeing with an argument, not the person stating the argument.
