Analyze the Argument

Academic research is a process to find, evaluate and use information to deepen your understanding and build new knowledge.

Remember, in academic research, you are not simply a consumer of information.

You are using information to extend an academic conversation or to defend a position in an academic argument.

First, you need to make sure that the sources you are using are scholarly, academic sources rather than popular sources.

Science Illustrated would be an example of a popular source because it is a trade magazine written for a general audience.

The Journal of Public Health would be a scholarly source because it is a journal written for medical professionals.

As you find sources, use your analytical reading skills to determine the author's stance or argument.
