Synthesize Your Position

Academic research is a process to find, evaluate and use information to deepen your understanding and build new knowledge.

As you research, you will find there are multiple perspectives about any issue, and not everybody agrees with each other!

You will use the information that you find to extend an academic conversation or to defend a position in an academic argument.

Before you choose a position to defend, make sure you have thoroughly researched both sides of the argument.

If you research only one side of an issue, or if you research only to support your personal beliefs, then you have not built new knowledge, and you need to review the definition of academic research.

Strong research allows you to have a broad understanding of a topic, so that you can speak (or write) knowledgeably.

Don't forget, this type of research analysis requires syntopical reading skills.
