No matter what you look like at the moment, we all started out the same way. We all began as a single cell - the zygote - containing all the instructions the was needed to make the you, you are today. We've gone from being a single cell to the trillions that you have now. You are a complicated being yet all the instructions to make you were once packed into a single cell.
Step 1 : Watch the video about what chromosomes are - as it summarises a lot of the information you'll need in this topic. (Learn)
Mission 1 : Now read and complete the section of work on "Cell and Chromosomes" in your workbooks. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
So wound up into our Chromosomes is our DNA - the instructions for building us, the code. But what exactly is our Genetic Code.
Step 2 : Have a look as the chemical structure of DNA is explained and how this simple yet compolex molecule makes us who we are. (Learn)
Mission 2 : Now not only complete the questions on "The Genetic Code" but also colour and build a DNA molecule. (Learn) (Create)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Step 3 : So what exactly is a nucleotide - watch and listen as it is explained to you. (Learn)
Mission 3 : Now it should be straight forward to complete the section on "Nucleotides" in your workbook. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Challenge 1 : Lets have a look at some actual DNA = your teacher will organise for you the equipment and resources needed so you can extract some actual DNA form cell. You will need to read the instructions found in the Experiment sheet here (you may do this with something other than Bananas too.) (Learn) (Create)
We all started out as a single cell, now we have trillions and more new cells are being made every day. The all need a set of instructions - the first step to making a new cell is making a copy of the DNA. This is a beautifully complex process = lets simplify it and see what goes on.
Step 4 : Watch and see how DNA gets copied. (Learn)
Now these are simplified explanations - here is a look at what it "looks" like in realtime by using CGI based on the real molecular structures. (Learn)
Mission 4 : Now you should be able to answer the questions on "DNA Replication" in your workbook. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
For Mitosis the cell goes through a series of steps to coordinate its dividing into 2 new cells.
Step 5 : Watch how this happens as its explained using models of chromosomes - you only need watch the first 5 and a half minutes then it moves on to the other type of cell division that we'll look at later. (Learn)
Step 5(a) : A few names were used during the video for each step - while not critical to remember they are interesting = if you want to find out more about Mitosis watch this next clip. (Learn)
Mission 5 : Now to exercise you new knowledge of Mitosis ..... Read and complete the "Mitosis" section in your workbooks. If you can add into the diagram the names of each stage of Mitosis pictured. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
So by now you should have a grasp of things like What DNA is, what DNA is made of, how DNA copies it self, and that DNA contains our genetic code. So once we have new cells, with their new semi-conservative copies of DNA - they don't sit there - they do stuff. Cells are little factories making stuff to allow us to live and grow the way we do. So how does the information on DNA get used?
Simply put DNA makes proteins and proteins make us ..... but nothing is ever as simple as it seems.
Step 6 : Have a look at how DNA and the genetic code of A's, T's, G's and C"s gets made into Proteins. There are a few videos to choose from = if one doesn't make sense try another one. (Learn)
Mission 6 : Got all that? Okay now test yourself by reading and completing to "DNA to Protein" section in your workbook. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Playtime : Here is a link to a simulation of some of the processes going on to make proteins. Have a go if you wish.
During your learning about how DNA makes proteins you will have heard about stuff called RNA. In case you are wondering what that is and how it fits in with all of this DNA stuff this next video may help. It isn't part of your tests but may help with the bigger picture = have a look if you want to. (Learn)
Step 7 : How is all this information for all the proteins that make us all organised on our Chromosomes ..... Watch as it is explained to you. (Learn)
Mission 7 : Are you a Gene genius? prove it by reading and completing the "Genes and Alleles" section in your work book. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Mission 8 : Now go and complete the definitions page at the start of the topic and any puzzle pages at the end of the topic = this will help you revise for the topic test. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Final Mission : Time to see how well you have grasped all this new information by doing the end of topic test. (Learn)
