There are only 2 kinds of forces - forces that push or forces that pull. These forces can be in direct contact eg bat on a ball = push or hands on a tug o war rope = pull. Or as with gravity or a magnet you can feel the pull/push but there is no contact.
Forces will speed things up or slow them down ...... lets go find out more. Spot the forces happening in this video.
Step 1 : Now watch these clips about forces on an object and contact and non-contact forces.
Mission 1 : Now go and read and complete the "Introduction to Forces, Forces Problems, and Balanced and Unbalanced Forces." pages in your workbooks (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Playtime : Go and use the simulation to improve your understanding of Forces and Motion in action - you'll get to try the others examples later on. (Create) (Share)
Mission 2: now take what you have discovered and apply it to the "Sarah's Ride to School" page in your workbooks. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Step 2 : So using a force on an object can move the object. By knowing the mass of the object and being able to calculate its acceleration (from the Motion section) we can find out the size of the force required. Have a look and find out how.
Mission 3 : Now its your turn to put this equation to use. Read and complete the "Force, Mass and Acceleration Problems" pages in your workbook. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Step 3 : So far we have been using the term "mass" but we also use the term "weight" - what is the difference, is there a difference? Have a look and find out.
Mission 4 : Now read and complete the work on "Mass and Weight" in your workbooks. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Step 5 : So forces move things - so what slows things down? Have a look and see what it is.
Playtime : Now go and have a go with the Friction and Acceleration simulations too. (Create) (Share)
Mission 5 : Now read and complete the work on "Friction" in your workbooks. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Have look and watch how people try to over come friction on water and land. (Share)
Did you see how "old" these records are = have they been beaten yet? (Share)
Step 6 : We call friction in air or water "Drag". In air its also called air resistance, watch how some people use it for fun.
Mission 6 : Now read and complete the page on "Air Resistance" in your workbooks. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
When you are running late to class - and you are running you can feel the pressure from the wind against you. when you blow up a balloon you can feel the pressure in the balloon. When you pump up a car tire you use a pressure gauge so you don't over inflate the tire.
So what exactly is pressure and how to we calculate it?
Pressure is just another word for a force - in this case pushing against something - so a force applied over a defined area is pressure.
Step 7(a) : Have a look and see how if we change the area or the force what happens to the pressure.
Step 7(b) : Now for some practice calculating pressure - have a look at how its done.
Mission 7 : Now read and the "Pressure and Pressure Problems" pages in your work book. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Mission 8 : Now complete the definitions page at the beginning and the puzzle page/s at the end of the forces topic section. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Final Mission : Now its time for the end of topic test - no pressure, don't feel forced into it.
