Welcome to motion - something we do and see happening around us .... but how do we quantify and describe it?
Step 1 : If we are to quantify motion we need to be familiar with the units used to measure it .... there are lots of units some are more appropriate than others. It depends on what you are measuring, e.g. a journey to the next town is most likely to be measured in Kilometers, not centimeters or millimeters.
Science is metric - so you need to be familiar with this system and be able to convert from one unit to the other, i.e. there are 1000 millimeters in a meter etc. Science also uses certain units over others = you need to know which should be used.
Mission 1 : Now read and complete the page on "Units of Speed" in your book. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Step 2 : Now that we are familiar with the units we need to use you need to practice using them.
Mission 2 : Watch the video clip - twice if you need to.... Now go and complete the "Calculating Speed" page in your books. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Step 3 : Now we aren't always asked to find the speed - sometime we have the speed and the time, so need to find the distance. Or we have the distance and the speed and need the time. = We need to rearrange the equation we learned about on the "Calculating Speed" page.
Mission 3 : Watch both of these clips as they teach you about the formula triangle - this is a REALLY important tool = So make sure you understand how to use this tool. Once you've finished with the videos go and try it out by completing the "Using Formula Triangles" and "More Speed Calculations" pages. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Step 4 : So far its just been numbers - some find these fun - but others prefer pictures = pictures made from numbers are graphs. So now its time to meet the Distance (or Position) vs Time graph and find out what you can do with it.
Mission 4 : So how do you go about making or understanding a Distance vs Time Graph. Here are some videos that help explain what to do. The first one watch as far as 4 minutes, and the second one ( Position vs Time - Part 1) - only watch as far as 8 minutes in = we will look at the rest later. Now go and complete the "Distance - Time Graphs" page. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Mission 5 : Now go and make your own graph from the data supplied = do the "Team NZ Secondary Schools" America's Cup pages. (Create)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Mission 6 : Now go and watch the rest of both of the videos - about how the slope of the line tells you the speed, and how to calculate this slope. Now complete the "Calculating Speed from a Distance - Time Graph". (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Mission 7 : Put this into practice by drawing and using the graph on the "NZ Secondary Schools Rally Team" page (Create)
Playtime : Use the simulation link (You'll need the correct player on your device to run it) below to see how the motion creates the graphs. Get you teacher to show you how to set it up only with distance/time and speed/time graphs. (Share)
Step 5 : Back to it - Things don't just travel at a speed, they need to get to that speed = accelerate or slow down from that speed = decelerate (negative acceleration).
Mission 8 : Time to watch the rest (we stopped at about 2 minutes in) of the video we started back at Step 2, Mission 2 about how to calculate acceleration. If you need to, go and re-watch the formula triangle videos too. Now go and complete the "Acceleration" and Acceleration Problems" pages (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Step 6 : Now time to put acceleration into pictures = Speed vs Time graph.
Mission 9 : Watch the next 2 videos, definitely all of the first one, and at least as far as 9 and a half minutes of the second ( Postion vs Time Part 2). Now complete "Speed-Time Graphs", "Calculating Acceleration from a Speed-Time Graph", as well as "Distance Travelled 1 and 2" (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Mission 10 : now put all that together in a graph you make form the data supplied as you complete the pages on "NZ Secondary Schools Space Program". (Create)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Mission 11 : You need to be able to recognise the difference between Speed-Time and Distance-Time graphs AND be able to convert one to the other. TIP when going from S-T to D-T figure out the distance travelled first, when going from D-T to S-T use the line slope to find the speed.
Or you can use the "Converting Speed-Time Graphs to Distance-Time Graphs" page as practice. HINT - you'll need to be able to do this in your topic test = go and do this page now. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Mission 12 : Now go and complete the definitions page at the start of the topic and any puzzle pages at the end of the topic = this will help you revise for the topic test. (Learn)
Done that? = Share with your teacher.
Yes = now its time for your next Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission.
No = go back and complete the Step/Video clip/Challenge/Mission please.
Final mission : Time to do the end of motion topic test. (Learn)
