Welcome to Yr 11 Science. You'll find it quite similar to Yr's 9 and 10 in that we still use the Scipad workbook. If you aren't familiar with this resource you'll find some explanatory video clips in this same section "All About....." in either Yr 9 or Yr 10 sites.
We are taking the foundation work done at Yr's 9 and 10 and expanding on it - some of the diagrams etc in the Scipad should look familiar. (don't dump your old Scipads as you'll need them to help with Yr 11)
This year the work counts for credits towards NCEA L 1.
Some of these credits will come from theoretical and practical work done in the Scipad that will be tested during the end of year exams - a physics based one, a chemistry based one, and a biology based one. These are known as External Assessments and are worth a total of 12 credits. This work will be done in the first 6-7 weeks of terms 1, 2, and 3. There will be practice exams done during class and as part of the school assessment week - these will let you know how you are getting on with regard to passing the end of year exams.
We will also be doing Internal Assessments, worth a total of 12 credits. This will be done in the final 3 weeks of each term. These involve some theoretical learning about the topic being assessed, some practical experimental work, and then a written report. Once again there will be a physics based one, a chemistry based one, and a biology based one.
During the few weeks of term 4 before exam leave starts we will be doing focused revision aimed at the external exams.
So Yr 11 Science offers a total of 24 credits towards NCEA (12 internal and 12 external credits)
