Building a Thinking Classroom (BTC)
The BTC pedagogy is from the work of Dr. Peter Liljedahl, (Canadian professor at Simon Fraser University and former high school math teacher).
After years of visiting a variety of classrooms, various ages, demographics, and conditions, Liljedahl discovered that there were many issues that prevented thinking in classrooms.
He observed that many students have learned to mimic, follow steps and procedures, but they had not developed thinking skills or independence. Liljedahl shares 14 Optimal Practices that build a culture of thinking in our classrooms and schools.
He continues training teachers, visiting classrooms around the world and shifting practice to engage students and teachers in this meaningful work.
Many of our Horizon classrooms have begun the BTC journey and are seeing how impactful this pedagogy is in student learning, retention and growth.
