"Novel Engineering" refers to a STEM education approach developed at Tufts University, where students read literature to identify problems faced by characters and then design and build solutions using the Engineering Design Process (READesign!)
The Educational Approach
This educational initiative integrates literacy and engineering in a hands-on, problem-based learning method, primarily for elementary and middle school students.
How it Works:
Teachers select a story or book from the curriculum, and students, acting as engineers, are challenged to solve a problem the characters face.
Skills Developed: Students use critical thinking, problem-solving, and the Engineering Design Process to brainstorm, design, test, and improve solutions.
Benefits: It makes literature more engaging, reinforces literacy skills, and helps students build 21st-century skills like creativity and collaboration.
Examples: Challenges can range from simple designs using recyclable materials to more complex projects involving 3D modeling.
