Horizon School Division (Horizon) values family and
community involvement, and is proud to offer
PreKindergarten instruction led by professional educators
who focus on early learning.
Our PreK programs are designed to encourage children to
lead and participate in their learning, and are shaped by early
childhood research and best practices.
How it Looks in Horizon
Horizon School Division values the importance of early learning. Based on the parameters of the Ministry of Education, Horizon School Division offers two types of early learning opportunities.
The Ministry of Education designated Pre-kindergarten programs target vulnerable three- and four-year-old children and their families. Provincially there is more demand than spaces within prekindergarten programs. In the province of Saskatchewan there are 319 ministry designated programs. Within Horizon School Division there are seven ministry designated programs in five communities. PreKindergarten is not universally offered to all children in Saskatchewan.
In the 2021-22 school year, Horizon School Division piloted an early learning opportunity for 4 year olds in multiple communities that did not have a Ministry designated PreKindergarten program. This 4 year old opportunity is paired with the kindergarten program in those buildings.
The objective of both initiatives is to optimize available early learning spaces and ensure they benefit children based on shared criteria.
