This week, me and Kevin (my mentor) had our internship mentor interview on Wednesday. In the interview he talked about how he first came to work at the museum, a little about his former mentor Ray and how he's grown over the years working there. He talked about his experiences living in Australia as a kid and how he got the opportunity to go and lecture in Singapore. He talked about both his family growing up and his current family, some of his previous experiences working with interns, and how he considered being a police officer or a lawyer when he was younger. And finally, he talked about how some of his biggest regrets were not taking the chance to learn how to play the accordion and to speak French and German.
What I chose to work on for my internship project was the curating all of the different books and artifacts the museum holds. Over this past month I've learned how to catalog every object and book by describing its simple facts and details which has provided me with a lot of information that I can translate into my project. My biggest challenge has been simplifying all this information for presentation.
What I hope to do after my academic internship ends is to possibly continue working at the Maritime Museum. One of the main reasons why I want to continue working at the museum is the enjoyment I get from learning about all the history. Between all the boats and displays of artifacts, there is always new and interesting projects to do every day. I have especially enjoyed working with a team and learning new skills.
