So far I'm really enjoying my internship as an assistant teacher for my mentor Oliver's class at high tech explorer, his students have all been fun to work with and assist as they begin to wrap up on their exhibition projects for next week. A challenge that I anticipated going into this field for my internship was having to work with misbehaving kids and while Oliver's class has been very nice, I cannot say the same for his power-hour group. Halfway through each full day a group of mixed 5th grade students comes in to do group reading with us who are mostly respectful in class and do their work, beside two kids named Manny and Able who have been very disrespectful in the class by throwing things, shouting, and taking other peoples belongings. Each time we do power-hour I try my best to be calm towards them and help keep them from being disruptive during class, and if they still continue to be unproductive I'll get the teacher to short things out.
This week, Oliver has assigned me to support small groups of students to help assist them on their exhibition projects, group reading, and other assignments that they're struggling with. I've improved a lot in achieving my growth question from assisting in these small groups because it lets me personally communicate to the students on how I can support them and how they could improve on their work. I have also improved on my growth question during power-hour this week where I have demonstrated how I've been supportive and patient towards the other students, even if they're being disrespectful to the class. Overall I think that I am improving a lot in my growth question and I am proud of what I have done in my internship to achieve it. An old habit of mine that I started to fall back on earlier this week was procrastinating on doing my blog posts until the deadline which I did a lot during my last internship, but after I realized what I was doing I started working on it as soon as I could.
Here is an updated photo of my timesheet for this week.
