In 8th grade, students analyze, create and represent linear and simple non-linear functions in multiple ways to make connections between them, including mathematical concepts related to bivariate data and Pythagorean Theorem, and “real-world” situations like those arising from two & three dimensional space.
Developmental Notes
Most of Target J is covered in Unit 5 as an application of linear equations/functions. The Development Notes from the Target J Item Specification pertain to that unit.
Most of Target J is covered in Unit 5 as an application of linear equations/functions. Many of the terms below apply in Unit 5and not here. At this point, focus only on those terms related to two-way frequency tables.
Frequently Asked Questions
The team strongly believed that this would be a great unit to build classroom culture and student success that could carry students throughout the remainder of the school year. The team would encourage PLCs to collaborate, brainstorm, and share ideas on how to use these mathematics topics to build in class culture where all students feel safe and are willing to try and take risks. The team wanted this to be its own unit so that teachers were able to take time building one of the key components to students' math success which is classroom culture.
The team strongly believed that this topic of Two-Way Frequency Tables that is covered by one of the targets of the grade would be a target that could naturally be built and fit in around most of the beginning and back to school pieces that normally occur like: class schedule changes, MAPs and MDTP testing, class assemblies, and other beginning of year activities.
The team would not recommend that PLC teams attempt to create a unit assessment around this one standard. There was some conversation about how the diagnostic data that is gathered on students at the beginning of each school year could be embedded into the analysis of two-way frequency tables to possibly increase student buy-in on the diagnostic assessments and analysis that are done at the beginning of the school year.
Teachers are highly encouraged to spiral in some intervention topics that can be extracted from data that would prepare students for the next unit, Linear Equations & Systems of Equations.
The team believes that this would be a natural place for students to use calculators to compute the various data pieces into their two-way frequency table.
