We are honored to have military veterans and reservists on the Hughes County EMS team. We have had Men and women from all five branches serve in our ranks. Veterans work in most areas of our operation.
We value the discipline, maturity and strong work ethic that are common to military service members. Veterans and reservists often find HCEMS a comfortable place to work. Like the military, HCEMS emphasizes teamwork, is mission-driven and follows a rank structure. To make life easier for reservist, we do modify duty time to accommodate reservists' regular drill/training requirements. We are highly supportive of team members' continued service to our country.
Though we welcome and appreciate the experience of combat medics and corpsman, such an assignment is not a prerequisite for working in our ambulance field operations. Military veterans and civilians who have completed a National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician approved course and obtained EMT, AEMT or NRP certification are eligible for employment on our operations team.
All HCEMS team members wear a duty uniform, and military veterans receive special uniform pins heralding their service to go on their Class A & B uniforms.

Hughes County EMS' Orientation Academy (mandatory for all new employees) is designed to give Paramedics, Advanced EMTs, and EMTs the understanding and education needed to succeed in our system. During the in-house training academy, new employees learn HCEMS' treatment protocols, undergo comprehensive skills evaluations, review safety procedures, practice emergency vehicle operations and are familiarized with our county, our history, and 911 communications. Orientation also includes training on pediatric injury prevention/management, geography and mapping, documentation, goal setting and achievements, public relations and customer service.
Upon successful completion of classroom training, Paramedics, Advanced EMTs and EMTs are paired with field training officers (FTOs) who evaluate all aspects of new employees’ pre-hospital patient care. Each orientee will complete at least eight shifts or satisfactorily manage at least 12 advanced life support calls. The clinical services department and the Office of the Medical Director determine when new employees may be cleared to function as EMTs or Paramedics.
At Hughes County EMS, education is an ongoing process. Learning does not stop when an employee finishes his initial EMT or Paramedic training, nor does it end with orientation classes. Professional development continues throughout an employee’s career at HCEMS.
HCEMS’ clinical services department is a leader in pre-hospital education for rural EMS. HCEMS’ clinical team provides in-house training programs for new employees and continuing education on state-of-the-art pre-hospital technologies to all employees. CEUS are offered every payday for all employees. Online CEUs are offered via VFIS University and FoamFRAT both of which are offered to employees at no cost.
HCEMS’ clinical services department promotes advancement within the system. Paramedics and EMTs who exhibit mastery of clinical skills, strong leadership abilities and professional work ethics have the opportunity to become instructors, preceptors, and field training officers.
