Q: What is an EMS Bond?
A: An EMS bond works generally the same as any other bond issue (i.e. School bonds). The bond will levy a tax on property in an area for a predetermined time and will pay back a loan for the entity seeking the bond.
Q: Why is the EMS Bond election not held during the November Presidential election?
A: Well as you know, the November Presidential Election occurs every 4 years, the EMS bond is every 5 years. By the wording of the State Constitution of Oklahoma, HCEMS cannot have more than 1 bond on the tax rolls at a time. As the 2016 bond election was held in January of that year, extensions, will occur every 5 years no earlier than January. The reason for this, is so the extensions can "butt" up together, not overlap, but not allow enough time to pass for the tax to "fall off" the roll and thereby causing a tax increase.
Q: Will this upcoming (Jan 2021) bond vote raise my current taxes?
A: No. In Jan 2016 the citizens of Hughes County voted for and passed by simple majority a bond that increased property tax. This bond would only maintain the current tax rate.
Q: What will you do with the money you get from this bond?
A: The purpose for this money is for purchase of new equipment and capital improvement. Examples of what we plan to do with this money include a remodel of Station 1 which is located in Holdenville, purchase of a supervisor vehicle, remounts of the ambulance modules currently in service onto new chassis, and the purchase of another Ford Transit Ambulance. These funds will also ensure that the stations currently in Calvin and Wetumka remain open and operational.
Q: What will happen if this bond does not pass?
A: Honestly we don't know. With current Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement rates being as low as they are coupled with the pandemic and increasing call volume it could prove difficult to maintain three stations without additional funds. One thing we can promise is that we will do our very best to provide excellent, cutting edge medical services to anyone inside the boundaries of our great county!
