Project Title: Loftis Middle School Outdoor Learning & Nature Engagement Project
Introduction: Loftis Middle School has a unique outdoor space behind the school with untapped potential. We know this space could become something incredible for our students, teachers, and community, but we need expert help to bring our vision to life.
We are looking for a creative and efficient design team to develop a functional, engaging, and sustainable outdoor learning environment.
Project Overview: We envision this space as a multi-functional outdoor learning area that supports science, agriculture, sustainability, and hands-on learning while being accessible, interactive, and community-friendly.
Our ideas so far include:
A repurposed pavilion to serve as an outdoor classroom
ADA-accessible nature trails winding through the wooded area
A garden space with raised beds, a garden shed, and a honey harvesting station
An observation platform overlooking a protected marshland and potential beaver habitat
Interactive learning stations along the trails (e.g., sensory gardens, scavenger hunts, play elements)
Sustainability features, such as trellis walls, solar power, and rainwater collection
Estimated Project Space & Considerations:
Total Area: Approx. 2-3 acres behind the school, including open space, wooded areas, and wetlands.
Existing Structures: A small metal pavilion (needs modifications for classroom use).
Accessibility: All areas should include ADA-accessible pathways and entry points.
Budget: Limited, requiring cost-effective, sustainable, and innovative solutions.
Timeline: Fast turnaround for proposal and phased implementation.
Project Goals & Priorities
1. Functionality & Learning – The space must be usable for multiple subjects and activities, from science experiments to creative writing.
2. Accessibility & Engagement – The area should be welcoming and usable for all students and visitors.
3. Sustainability – Features should be eco-friendly, low-maintenance, and integrated with nature.
4. Cost-Effective Design – The plan must consider budget-friendly materials and phased implementation.
5. Creativity & Innovation – We want fresh, exciting ideas that make Loftis Middle School’s outdoor space a one-of-a-kind learning experience.
