Chorus Course Descriptions
NOTE:
Only students who ENJOY SINGING should consider taking chorus classes.
ALL CHORUS CLASSES are performance based and participation in concerts/choral events are required.
CONCERT CHORUS I /CONCERT CHORUS II
(Vocal Music Beginning)
Credit: 1 unit
Prerequisite: Beginning-None; Intermediate-Successful completion of Vocal Music Beginning and/or teacher recommendation
CA: 9th – 12th Grade
Students are NOT required to audition. Students in these courses will rehearse and perform a mixture of choral and pop/country music for combined men's and women's voices and will cover the basics of music reading. Students in these courses may be required to do choreography in their performances. Students must purchase a tee shirt for shows. $10 class fee.
TREBLE CHORUS I (Fall)
(Vocal Music Beginning)
Credit: 1 unit
Prerequisite: Beginning-None
CA: 9th – 12th Grade
Students are NOT required to audition. Students in these courses will rehearse and perform a mixture of choral and pop music for women's vocal ranges only and will cover the basics of music reading. Students in these courses may be required to do choreography in their performances. Students must purchase a tee shirt for shows. $10 class fee.
SINGER ON STAGE (spring)
Vocal Music Intermediate
Credit: 1 unit
Prerequisite: By audition
CA: 10th – 12th Grade
Students are required to audition. Students will receive individual and group voice lessons and coaching. Students will practice the basics of working with an accompanist and performing various genres of music including: art song, pop/contemporary, jazz, musical theater, opera, etc. $15 class fee.
HONORS SINGER ON STAGE (spring)
Vocal Music Intermediate
Credit: 1 unit
Prerequisite: By audition
CA: 11th – 12th Grade
Students are required to audition. Students will receive individual and group voice lessons and coaching. Students will practice the basics of working with an accompanist and performing various genres of music including: art song, pop/contemporary, jazz, musical theater, opera, etc. Students receiving honors credit are required to perform at least onc individually for and audience. Students will also receive guidance and coaching for college auditions if interested in pursuing vocal music at the collegiate level. $45 class fee.
MEN OF SONG CHORUS
Vocal Music Beginning
Credit: 1 unit
Prerequisite: None
CA: 9th – 12th Grade
Students are NOT required to audition. Students in these courses will rehearse and perform a mixture of choral and country music for men's vocal ranges only and will cover the basics of music reading. Students in these courses may be required to do choreography in their performances. Students must purchase a tee shirt for shows. $10 class fee.
ORION CHORUS (1st Semester)
(Vocal Music Intermediate)
Credit: 1 unit
Prerequisite: By audition
CA: 9th - 12th Grade
Students in this class are required to audition. Students in this class will rehearse and perform music from many different genres in preparation for the fall pops concert and winter concert. Students will be required to participate in many performances in the school and community throughout the semester and will progress to a more advanced level in performing/reading music. Only students in auditioned courses are eligible to audition for NC Honors Chorus, Mars Hill Honors Choral Clinic, and other honors choirs. Students will pay a fee of $100 for a chorus shirt, a hoodie (or sweatshirt), binder, and rental of concert uniform.
ORION CHORAL ENSEMBLE (2nd Semester)
(Music Specialization Intermediate)
Credit: 1 unit
Prerequisite: By audition
CA: 9th Grade – 12th Grade
Students in this class are required to audition. Students in this class will rehearse and perform music from many different genres in preparation for competition and participation in Music Performance Adjudication (Large Ensemble) and at graduation and will progress to a more advanced level in vocal/choral performance and reading music. Students will be required to participate in many performances in the school and community throughout the semester. Students are encouraged to travel to competition in the spring. Students will pay a fee of $100 for a chorus shirt, a hoodie (or sweatshirt), binder, and rental of concert uniform.
HONORS ORION CHORUS III (1st Semester)
(Vocal Music Proficient)
Credit: 1 unit
Prerequisite: Completion of Vocal Music Intermediate, audition and teacher recommendation
CA: 11th Grade
In addition to coursework in Orion, students will be required to audition for NC Honors Chorus, Mars Hill University Honors Chorus Festival and/or other honors chorus.
HONORS ORION CHORAL ENSEMBLE III (2nd Semester)
(Orion Proficient)
Credit: 1 unit
Prerequisite: Completion of Vocal Music Intermediate, audition and teacher recommendation
CA: 11th Grade or 12th Grade
In addition to course work in Orion Choral Ensemble, students will be required to audition for at least one honors chorus or participate in an individual vocal project approved by the teacher.
