Marketing Course Descriptions

CA:  9th – 12th Grade


Marketing introduces students to the dynamic processes and activities involved in marketing. Students develop an understanding of marketing functions, applications, and impact on business operations, including skills in the areas of distribution, marketing-information management, market planning, pricing, product/service management, promotion, and selling. Students create a proposal for a new product.


Work-based learning opportunities include business and industry field trips, Cooperative Education, internship, job shadowing, mentorship, and service learning. Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO), such as DECA, are an integral part of this curriculum. DECA incorporates strategies used to teach course content, develop leadership, citizenship, responsibility, and proficiencies related to workplace needs.



MARKETING APPLICATIONS

Credit:  1 unit

Prerequisite:  MM51 Marketing OR MI21 Fashion Merchandising

CA:  10th – 12th Grade


Marketing II allows students to develop a deeper understanding of marketing mix strategies and the marketing model. Students gain knowledge and skills for careers in marketing by exploring the role of marketing research, marketing data, and marketing communications. In this course, students will propose a strategic marketing plan for a business or organization of their choice.

SPORT AND EVENT MARKETING I

Credit:  1 unit

Prerequisite:  Marketing strongly recommended

CA:  9th – 12th Grade 


Sport and Event Marketing I introduces students to sport and event industries. Students will develop an understanding of marketing, branding, promotion, media, and marketing data as they relate to the sport and event industries to create an event proposal.

SPORT AND EVENT MARKETING II HONORS

Credit:  1 unit

Prerequisite:  Sport and Event Marketing I 

(formerly Sports and Entertainment Marketing I)

CA:  10th – 12th Grade 


Sport and Event Marketing II  allows students to develop a deeper understanding of the sport, entertainment, and event industries. Students utilize marketing data to make informed communication decisions, analyze the financial and economic impacts of sports and events, and gain the knowledge and skills for careers in sport and event marketing.  Students apply knowledge of promotion and marketing to develop a comprehensive marketing plan for a unique event, and participate in event management activities at Pisgah and within the community.  Examples include: Volleybuff Showdown, Mr. Milltown, and Zombie Rush 5K, and various outdoor/indoor movie events.

MARKETING ADVANCED STUDIES

Credit:  1 unit

Prerequisite:  Two technical credits, one being completer course in MRKT - Marketing Management (MMGT) or HOSP - Sport and Event Marketing (SEMK)

CA:  This is a culminating course for seniors who have earned two technical credits in a career cluster, one of which is a completer course.  


CTE Marketing Advanced Studies is a culminating course for seniors who have earned two technical credits, one of which is a completer course, in a Career Pathway (HOSP or MRKT). The course must enhance the content of the completer course and prepare students for success in transitioning to postsecondary education and future marketing careers.  Students work under the guidance of a teacher in collaboration with other school-based personnel, community members, and business representatives. The course includes four parts; writing a research paper, producing a product, developing a portfolio, and delivering a presentation. Only one Advanced Studies course allowed per high school career. A second may be allowed, only with administrative approval and after the registration process is closed.


MARKETING COOPERATIVE EDUCATION

Credit:  1 unit

Prerequisite:  Enrollment in Marketing Education Course

CA:  11th - 12th Grade, personal transportation required.


Get paid while earning course credit! Cooperative Education training integrates classroom curriculum with real-work experience. Marketing Co-op is available during 4th block to students who are enrolled in a Marketing Education course and meet all prerequisites.  Marketing Co-op students must be employed in a position that demonstrates selling skills (i.e. face-to-face interaction with customers/clients and monetary transactions), maintain employment and pay/hour records throughout the semester, and complete connecting classroom activities.


Students must secure teacher approved employment prior to the beginning of the semester and be able to provide transportation to their training site upon dismissal from campus.  Students will begin with the associate level training program, then have the opportunity to advance to the management level training program.  Only two Marketing Co-op courses are allowed per high school career. 


MARKETING INTERNSHIP HONORS

Credit:  1 unit

Prerequisite:  Current or past enrollment in a Marketing completer course (Sport and Event Marketing II or Marketing Applications) related to the internship, personal transportation required, minimum 2.5 GPA and/or teacher recommendation.

CA:  12th Grade


CTE Marketing Internship allows students additional development of career and technical competencies within a marketing-related career/industry during 4th block.  Internships allow students to explore a career/industry by gaining hands-on experience in a number of related activities. Students observe and participate in daily business operations.  The teacher, student, and business mentor collaboratively plan the organization, implementation, and evaluation of an internship, which may be unpaid or paid.


Students must secure a teacher approved internship prior to the beginning of the semester and be able to provide transportation to their internship site upon dismissal from campus. Previous intern hosts and business partners include Champion Credit Union, H&R Block, Willow Hill Soap Company, Haywood County Tourism Development Authority, Elite Hair and Nail Salon, Folkmoot USA, and Chestnut Ridge Events.
