Marching Band (Winds and Percussion) (L1, L2)

Credit:  1 unit

Prerequisite:  Middle School Band

CA: 9th-12th Grade

Additional Fee: $200 Plus Maintenance


Marching Band requires strenuous physical exercise and the ability to play the difficult literature encountered in the activity. Students who wish to join the marching band program at Pisgah High School must have taken band in middle school prior to the class. Students can choose to be in the marching band for the fall semester only. Students will be responsible for learning music related to the halftime show, Friday night football games, Saturday competitions, pep rallies, parades, and any other performances per request of school administration and community leaders. Students must provide instruments that would have been required to purchase in their middle school band programs. The Band Program at Pisgah will provide the same instruments that were provided at the middle school level which may include but not limited to Oboes, Bassoons, Bass and ContraBass Clarinets, Tenor and Bari Saxes, French Horns, Euphoniums, Tubas, Electric Bass and Percussion Instruments. The class fee while in this class is $200 and the general maintenance and supplies for the student’s instrument.

Students in Marching Band who wish to receive honors credit will also have to audition for all-district honors band.


MARCHING BAND COLORGUARD

Credit:  1 unit

Prerequisite:  Yearly Audition

CA:  9th-12th Grade

Additional Fee: $200 Plus Attire


Color Guard requires strenuous physical exercise and the ability to perform the difficult dance and choreography encountered in the activity. Students can choose to be in the Color Guard for the fall semester only. To be considered for the Color Guard, students must attend a yearly audition which happens in the spring semester prior to the Marching Season. Students will be responsible for learning the visual arts related to the yearly halftime show performed at Friday night football games and Saturday Competitions. Other visual arts performances for the Color Guard may include but are not limited to: stand choreography, pep rallies, parades, and any other performances per request of school administration and community leaders. The class fee while in this class is $200 plus the purchase of group uniform.


CONCERT BAND (L1, L2,L3)

Credit:  1 unit

Prerequisite:  Middle School Band or Teacher Recommendation

Additional Fee: $40 Plus Maintenance and Attire


The Concert Band curriculum is designed to help students develop a confident sound and techniques on their instrument. Students who wish to be in the Concert Band class at Pisgah High School must have taken band in middle school prior to this class. Content in this class will start with knowledge learned in middle school band and pace students to meet a level of musicianship that will move them into more advanced ensembles at Pisgah. Like other ensembles, students will also perform at various events at our school, community and our district. Students must provide instruments that would have been required to purchase in their middle school band programs. The Band Program at Pisgah will provide the same instruments that were provided at the middle school level which may include but not limited to  Oboes, Bassoons, Bass and ContraBass Clarinets, Tenor and Bari Saxes, French Horns, Euphoniums, Tubas, and Double Bass. The class fee while in this class is $40 plus the purchase of concert attire, and the general maintenance and supplies for the student’s instrument.



PERCUSSION (L1, L2)

Percussion Techniques is designed to make percussionists more well rounded musicians in their own art form. Teaching strategies for this class will revolve around students who have had middle school band in the past as a percussionist or who have prior knowledge of reading instrument notation for percussion. Topics in the class will include differentiating style of percussion performance on various instruments which include but not limited to: mallets, timpani, multi-perc, rudimental snare, concert music, percussion ensemble, and marching band music. Percussionists will be asked to purchase the necessary equipment needed to perform while at Pisgah High School. The feeder programs of Bethel Middle and Canton have a list of needs that percussion students must purchase since the majority of equipment used for the class is purchased through the school system and booster programs. The class fee while in this class is $40 plus the purchase of concert attire and the general equipment stated above.

SYMPHONIC BAND (L1, L2)

Prerequisite:  Teacher Recommendation

The Symphonic Band is composed of students with the dedication and practice skills necessary to perform the highest levels of literature of Pisgah’s band program. Students in this class are expected to have a greater understanding of musicianship prior to being in the class. Placement in Symphonic Band can come from recommendations by the middle school band directors that taught the students prior to Pisgah High School or auditions held by the band director at Pisgah High School. Students in this class will be taught music necessary to perform at various events at our school and various concerts, in our community when called upon by community members, and in our district. This group is taken yearly for accreditation at North Carolina State Music Performance Assessment sponsored by the North Carolina Bandmasters Association. Students must provide instruments that would have been required to purchase in their middle school band programs. The Band Program at Pisgah will provide the same instruments that were provided at the middle school level which may include but not limited to  Oboes, Bassoons, Bass and ContraBass Clarinets, Tenor and Bari Saxes, French Horns, Euphoniums, Tubas, and Double Bass. Band Leadership is a class designed to assist our feeder programs by having students from Pisgah High School come in and help with lessons, playing tests, or other needs of the Band Directors of Canton Middle and Bethel Middle. Other content will include Leadership building, Music Theory, and assisting Mr. Sanders with other ensembles as needed. All members of this class are expected to audition for the All-District Honor Band. The Band Program at Pisgah will provide the same instruments that were provided at the middle school level which may include but not limited to Oboes, Bassoons, Bass and ContraBass Clarinets, Tenor and Bari Saxes, French Horns, Euphoniums, Tubas, and Double Bass. The class fee for this class is $10 plus the purchase of concert attire, and the general maintenance and supplies for the student’s instrument.
