Librarian
The library is a calm space. It is located on the first floor, overlooking the Atrium. It has over 6,000 books so there are plenty to choose from!
Pupils will find all the popular titles such as Wimpy Kid, Tom Gates and Tracy Beaker, as well as popular authors like David Walliams, Roald Dahl and Micheal Morpurgo.
We are more than happy for pupils to read their own books too, as long as they show Mrs Frost what they're reading so we can ensure there is an Accelerated Reader quiz available for it.
The library is open every break and lunchtime for pupils to complete homework, take book quizzes, play Top Trumps or read/write/draw.
There are printing facilities available.
It is a calm environment for pupils and there is always a member of staff on duty.
Here at HHVCS all pupils in Year 7 and 8 read all the time. They always have a book in their bag and they read every day. Yes - every day!
As part of the timetable in Year 7, pupils will have a library lesson every fortnight. During this time pupils will have an opportunity to read, complete book quizzes and explore the library. It also gives us a chance to monitor progress and chat to pupils about how their reading is going. The first library lesson will include a reading test on the computer and the results of this test allow us to find the right book for the pupil.
The pupils will then read the book at home and in school and, on completion, they will log on to Accelerated Reader to take a book quiz. This will earn the pupil points which count towards the their termly target. We like to reward our pupils who read and pass quizzes, so those who hit their target are in for a treat!
Pupils are supported and encouraged every step of the way and regular conversations are held where we talk about books, stories and what to choose next.
Library lessons happen once a fortnight and are an opportunity to relax in a different environment which helps to enhance learning.
