The Expressive Arts include Art and Design, Music and Drama allowing pupils to be creative and imaginative whilst representing feelings and emotions, both their own and others. We aim to help every child achieve their potential while learning how to: Be creative and express themselves with confidence and experience enjoyment through performance and presentation. The area of learning also offers extensive extra-curricular activities which give the opportunity to further particular creative skills and develop the self. Our aim is to foster and promote a belief that the Expressive Arts can have wider benefits in all pupils' social development building resilience, self esteem, sense of achievement and an appreciation of the world surrounding them.
In Year 7, Pupils will develop their artistic skills by exploring the formal elements of line, tone, colour, shape and form. These skills will be under overarching exciting themes and topics designed to engage all learners and abilities. As they work in their sketchbooks they will be encouraged to think about presentation and use a growing and evolving art vocabulary to formulate personal opinions and also compare and contrast related artists, designers and craftspeople studied. They will also write about new methods and techniques used and evaluate outcomes.
Pupils will also work out of their sketchbooks and be encouraged to work on different scales working independently as well as in groups.
Pupils begin by learning the key musical elements that will be used throughout KS3, and learn to work independently and collaboratively in a variety of tasks. The keyboard and singing are the two main ways pupils will perform in music, either as part of a class choir, class karaoke, individual performance or as an ensemble. Pupils coming to the school having learnt an instrument from a Peri will continue having their lessons weekly and are given the opportunity to join a variety of vocal and instrumental ensembles as extra curricular. Students in the classroom are encouraged to be creative, experiment with ideas, make mistakes and try new things - hopefully leading our learners to live successful lives in the future as a result of the education they will have received.
