Please note that answers to the questions are based on our 'normal' ways of working and that some things may be adapted slightly on account of Covid-19 and social distancing regulations.
"How long will I get for break and lunch each day?"
Usually, you will have 20 minutes for morning break and 40 minutes for lunch. You might not spend all of this time eating, you could take part in a sports club or use the school library.
"What food can I buy in the school canteen?"
The canteen sells a wide range of food - from hot breakfast baguettes to cold salad sandwiches. You can also get a wide range of different meals such as spaghetti bolognese, traditional roast dinner and fish and chips!
"Will there be a shuttle bus from the old Portfield site?"
No - pupils who live within a 3 mile radius of the new school site will have to make their own way to and from school each day. Buses are only provided for pupils who live within out catchment area and are more than 3 miles away. Please contact School Transport at PCC if you need any more information about this.
"What should I do if I haven't received my Food Zone card?"
Don't panic! Catering will start printing and distributing the cards in the next few months. (Updated March 2023)
"Will I be in a form with my friends?"
We always work very hard to ensure that everybody is placed in the right form group for them. This usually means that you have at least one friend in your form. You can meet your new form class when you attend your allocated transition sessions on 28th and 29th June 2023.
"Am I allowed to wear black leather trainers?"
Shoes should be plain black and polishable. They must not include any visible logo and must be flat with no heel. Canvas trainers/shoes are not acceptable other than in Physical Education lessons.
"What should I do if I get lost?"
Don't panic! Stop, take a breath and ask someone for directions. Staff and pupils at HHVCS are friendly and will show or tell you where to go.
"What happens if I am late for school?"
If you arrive late you should sign in at Pupil Reception (Student Services) before making your way to your class room. Punctuality is really important to us at HHVCS so we encourage pupils to be on time every day. We understand that, occasionally, things happen that might make us late, but these are usually very rare.
"How many maths lessons will I have?"
Pupils in Year 7 currently have 2 or 3 lessons of maths per week.
"Do we have to wear school uniform?"
Yes, uniform is really important to us at HHVCS. Check out the Uniform page for more information.
"Can I attend more than one club?"
Yes! You can attend as many clubs as you would like.
"Can I talk to older pupils that I know from primary school?"
Of course, lots of our pupils interact with each other during break and lunch times. However, you'll probably find that you'll make lots of new friends in your form class and will want to hang out with them instead.
"Where could I find a member of staff to speak with if I am feeling sad?"
You can talk to any member of staff at school if you are feeling sad, although you may want to go to your form room to speak with your form tutor, or to see Mrs Davies (Year 7 Achievement Leader) or Mrs Phillips (Year 7 Pastoral Assistant). Miss Thomas and Mrs Parsons are also part of the pastoral support team who can give help or guidance when you need it - see the 'Need to Talk?' page for more details.
"How do I apply for a club?"
You will be given details about clubs and activities when you start in September, including how to apply for a place.
"Will I get detention if I get lost and then arrive late for my lesson?"
We understand that it takes pupils a little while to find their way around school in the first half term, so we wouldn't give you a detention for arriving late to a lesson if you got lost. After half term, pupils usually know their way around really well so there will no excuse for being late! :)
"Can I speak to a teacher in a different part of school?"
Yes, if you want to see a specific teacher at break or lunch then you will be allowed to move around school to find them.
"Will I get to do woodwork?"
You will cover a range of areas in Technology lessons during your time at HHVCS. These include: woodwork, metal work, textiles, graphic design and food technology.
"What time does school start?"
The official school day starts at 8:45am but it would be a good idea to get to school just before this so you are ready!
"What do I need to bring to school?"
Check out the equipment list on the uniform page. You will also need a packed lunch or your Food Zone card.
"Are teachers going to be easy to find?"
Yes, teachers are usually in their classrooms during lessons and there are plenty of staff on duty at break and lunch times.
"Can I wear black leather brogues?"
Yes, as long as they are polishable with no noticeable logo. They must be flat with no heel.
"Where can I buy a school skirt?"
You can only buy the skirt directly from school. Check out the uniform page for updates about the School Skirt Shop.
"Do forms mix together?"
Yes, pupils are mixed for PE, Technology and Maths,
"Will we have swimming lessons?"

"Do we have to wear uniform in September?"
