HAMILTON, GA (FEB. 4, 2025) – Despite the grey, misty day, spirits were high at Park Elementary as students, staff, and special guests gathered to celebrate a truly out-of-this-world event—the planting of Luna, a Loblolly Pine seedling that traveled over 268,000 miles around the Moon aboard NASA’s Artemis I Mission.
The first-grade class, assisted by representatives from the Georgia Forestry Commission, had the honor of planting Luna in her new home on school grounds alongside the sidewalk as guests enter the front entrance of the school.
"Today, we’re planting more than just a tree," said Principal Allyson Douthit. "We’re planting a symbol of exploration, scientific discovery, and the boundless potential of our students. Luna’s journey—from space to Harris County—will serve as a lasting reminder to our Tiger Cubs to dream big and reach for the stars."
To mark the occasion, guests enjoyed Moon Pies as a fun nod to the tree’s cosmic journey, while students received Starburst candy, reinforcing the theme of space and discovery.
Heather Westad, the Park Elementary teacher who applied for and secured the school’s Moon Tree, shared her excitement: “This is an incredible opportunity—not just for our students and school, but for the entire community. Having a piece of space exploration right here in Harris County is truly special.”
Luna now stands as a living testament to innovation and exploration, encouraging students to embrace curiosity and STEM learning for generations to come.
