Park Elementary participated in the UGA Pollinator Census. Using STEAM journals, students collected the data of how many pollinators were seen in the garden at Park. Each student received their Certificate of Participation from the University of Georgia Center of Urban Agriculture in appreciation of furthering their knowledge of pollinator populations by participating in this citizen science project.
Gardening
Observing the growth and determining how much water our plants need based on data collected and observation of soil.
Identifying the problem to find the earth-friendly way to reduce-or even eliminate - the damage caused by garden pests.
Recycling
Park has partnered with Crayola to bring recycling to the classroom. We collaborated as a school to collect dried markers and ship them back to Crayola. Crayola collected all the markers and recycled them.
How can we observe a rainbow and isolate the colors? We investigated how water moves up the paper towels through a process called capillary action.
We dissected the pumpkins, identified the parts of the pumpkin, and integrated dance to learn the life cycle of the pumpkin.
Carving and dissecting the pumpkin. Counting seeds and exploring the inside of the pumpkin.
First Grade partnered with Georgia Organics for their annual Farm to School Month. This year's theme was "Livin' La Vida Okra!" First Grade grew and investigated okra, as well as used it for math and art.
First graders studied the art of Wissaly Kandinsky and integrated his techniques into our Georgia Organics Farm to School Month.

Tulip Test Garden- 1st to Bloom NATIONWIDE
First graders at Park Elementary participated in the Journey North Tulip Test Garden as citizen scientists. As a nationwide experiment through Journey North, Park students gathered, recorded, and reported data from their tulip garden. Out of all the schools nationwide, Park’s tulips were the first to bloom!
Shadow Art
Earth Day with NASA
Students joined the live online event “Earth Day with NASA.” Students discussed why Earth is the best place in the universe, read a book with an astronaut aboard the ISS, and learned how astronauts do everyday tasks such as washing their hair!
Georgia Ag Week
March 21 - 25 was Georgia Ag Week! This weeklong celebration highlighted the many things that make Georgia "Nature's Favorite State!" Park students celebrated this week in support of Park’s STEAM mission of creating citizens who are environmentally aware. A few of the activities completed in celebration of the week included students planting vegetables, writing thank you cards to Georgia farmers, and making homemade ice cream.
The Great Bird Yard Bird Count
First Graders learned how to identify common birds around our school grounds. Students submitted their bird counts to the Merlin Bird ID app as part of The Great Bird Yard Bird Count in partnership with the Audubon Society. This activity helps fulfill Park’s STEAM vision to create environmentally aware citizens!
First grade teachers asked HCSD superintendent Mr. Couch, avid birdwatcher, if he could teach a lesson on bird identification. Mr. Couch was happy to oblige and taught Park students five common birds they can identify in their own backyard!
Mrs. Westad celebrates student participation with class certificates of completion.
