How does your garden grow? Ours grows with Bonnie Plants! Mrs. Moye received a gift card from Bonnie Plants’ donation and sponsorship program. The program’s goal is to connect children to the life-enhancing benefits of community gardens and green spaces, including health and wellness, therapeutic, environmental, community engagement and community building. Thank you, Bonnie Plants!
Artist Annie Greene taught fourth grade art club members how to create a mini art exhibition of their own. Mrs. Greene was an art teacher for 35 years in LaGrange, Georgia. When she realized how much her students loved yarn painting in class, she decided to try it out for herself. She is now famous for her fascinating paintings in yarn, which tell stories from her life. She has also written two books; Georgia Farm Life in the ‘40s and What Color is Water?
Harris County Farm Bureau facilitates grade level appropriate lessons for PreK-4th grade at Park. Literacy components are integrated with a full lesson that encompasses a historic artist and art work, musician and musical composition. All students become members of the "two-bite" club, which promotes healthy eating habits from the lessons that are studied.
Luke Ellerman from Four Corners Honeybee Company in Phenix City, Al., visited Park Elementary on June 24, 2021, to share his in-depth knowledge of honeybees. Mr. Ellerman showed students a real honeybee colony and explained the roles of each type of bee. Students enjoyed a new version of “Where’s Waldo” called, “Where’s the Honey Bee?” It was hard to spot her amidst the worker bees and the drones!
CTAE Collaboration with our local high school for AG in the class. Harris County High School students come over and facilitate monthly lessons with our students.
Flint Energies Bright Ideas Program awarded Mrs. Lean, 3rd-grade teacher at Park Elementary, the grant entitled “Can You Dig It?" Flint Energies customers can opt to "round up" their payments to the nearest dollar, and those funds are used to support teachers and students. "Can You Dig It?" will engage all 3rd-graders at Park in exploring soil from prehistoric times to the present soil in our garden at Park. Students will dig for fossils, research solutions to soil and water pollution with class books, compost, and collect rain water with the funds from this grant. Park teachers are thankful for the hands-on learning experiences they will share with their students as a result of winning this award.
First grade Tiger Cubs at Park Elementary learned the importance of fire safety from firefighter and EMS paramedic Sean Guerrero. Students designed and created firefighter puppets, made a yummy fire truck snack, and worked with parents to create a home safety plan in case of a fire. It is very important for students to know what to do if they are ever around a fire.
HCHS and Park Elementary came together through STEAM and the CTAE (Construction, Technology, Agriculture Education) department to collaborate with the Little Builders Workshop, which is sponsored by CEFGA (Construction Education Foundation of Georgia) and Home Depot. The SkillsUSA team from Mr. Steel's class and STEAMers from Mrs. Moss's class came to Park Elementary to work with the 4th grade students from Ms. Rexrode and Mrs. McClung's classes. Students used woodworking skills to construct their own individual toolboxes. They zoomed with Kayleen McCabe (licensed contractor, TV host, and DIY's Rescue Renovation) from Colorado for an amazing build and insight into CEFGA. Ms. Rexrode from Park and Mr. Steel's class will be collaborating to add a Construction Club to the elementary school.
We participate each October in a nationally-recognized Farm to Early Care and Education Program. This program provides materials to engage our students with knowledge of healthy foods in our classroom. We planted and now harvested our okra. We observed, measured and wrote about our findings in our STEAM journals.
Mrs. Cox, our 4-H Extension Officer, worked with students using measurement and ingredients from local farms to produce an edible treat! Students rotated through stations learning background knowledge and calculating the amounts of each item that would be needed. Students communicated their plan in collaborative groups and then tested their projections of ingredient combinations.
Students tuned in to watch a once in a lifetime space event! Park teachers and students participated in a STEAM watch party to celebrate the landing of the Mars Perseverance Rover, February 18, 2021. Park Elementary sent home over 100 “take and make” rover kits to families. Students were able to create their own rubber band powered rovers as they watched NASA’s live stream of the Perseverance landing. The kits were comprised of found and recycled materials in standing with Park’s STEAM mission to “create a community of thinkers who communicate the importance of environmental responsibility by resolving real world problems.”
Mrs. Boggus received the STEAMing Forward, Learning Outside the Box grant for her 3rd grade project proposal. Diverse Power’s program provides grants such as this one which are designed to gather voluntary contributions from participating members by “rounding up” their monthly power bill to the next dollar with the difference going to support education in the communities. The submitted proposal requested funds to purchase building materials in the amount of $784.34. With these materials, students will experience engineering firsthand by designing and constructing structures using real-life applications and problem-solving skills.
The Front Porch Gang is a group of local volunteers that support our students and school by providing needed resources for classrooms and even pumpkins for decorating. The Front Porch Gang members adopt classrooms each year to provide additional support. This results in the volunteers reading to the classrooms weekly and acting as mentors to at risk students.
Kindergarten students received $1,700.00 from the Monarch Watch Grant to fund plant purchases to establish a monarch pollinator garden.
Students utilize the sensory room and walkway to address social-emotional needs and facilitate gross motor coordination skills. Valley Healthcare Systems awarded a $2,000.00 grant to the Park STEAM committee in order to fund this project for our Tiger Cubs.
Mr. Levi has played for audiences of all descriptions, sharing a colorful and sometimes whimsical perspective on life through songs that celebrate the small moments of everyday experience. His music offers a reflective and unhurried consideration of our accidental roads, our happy lightenings, our open windows, the people in our towns, the movement of our moments, the games we play and the things we are leaving behind. He continuously contributes to the success at Park Elementary by volunteering time every Thursday to our Tiger Cubs. He models a real-world example of a true artist from his music to his writings and his inspiring encouragement for all our Tiger Cubs to pursue their dreams!
