Gardening
Second Grade students at Park Elementary planted 20 different types of seeds in seed pods that were donated from Linda Luttrell with Harris County Farm Bureau. The seeds included scallions, cucumber, turnip, cherry tomato, parsley, carrot, eggplant, gherkin, beet, leaf lettuce, celery, radish, kale, thyme, broccoli, fennel, basil, iceberg lettuce, leek, and bell pepper. The seed pods were placed in the school greenhouse. As the seeds grow, the plants will be transferred to the raised flower beds in the second grade garden, and the students will watch a large variety of vegetables grow!
Second grade students are reducing waste within our school and community by collecting k-cups. Students are reusing coffee grounds to keep slugs from our plantals, nourish our soil with nitrogen, and help create rich soil in our compost. We are working to find a use for our plastic k-cup casings.
Artist Isatou Cessay from Gambia noticed that her village was full of plastic, so she took that “trash” and repurposed it by making jewelry and purses. Repurposing these materials also led to an increase in cleanliness in the village. The second grade STEAM initiative at Park is reduce, reuse and recycle, so students are following Cessay’s lead by creating jewelry from plastic bags.
