Watch this funny video to see just how important detailed procedures are!
We can all agree that giving directions is very important! Directions should be easy-to-understand, clear, and in the correct order. We practice just this with a mini-unit of writing How-To's.
Procedural Writing, or How-To Writing, is a piece of writing that explains how to do something using a specific order of steps. For example, How To Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich or How To Tie Your Shoe. In Second Grade, we work to write clear steps that include lots of details and are in order. We also talk about the importance of using transition words and phrases, such as first, next, immediately after that, and last.
What makes this unit so much fun is that students get to pick their own topic to teach us how to do something. What will you teach us how to do??
