Suggestions for a successful homework routine:
1) Give your child options - ex. play first when they get home and then homework or homework first and then play, before or after dinner, etc. Whatever the options, make sure your child is part of the decision!
2) Allow for free time - your child has just been using their brain for 6+ hours in school so if your child needs a break before, during, after please provide time for them to unwind.
3) Establish a Timeline - our homework should take anywhere from 15-25 minutes per night. With that in mind, if your child is having issues with homework, please reach out so we can ensure homework remains a refresher and not a stressor!
4) Pick a Homework Spot - somewhere that your child can focus, has their materials on hand, and is comfortable for them!
5) Be consistent - since we are working on creating good homework habits, it is important that your family homework plan remains consistent so your child will be able to continue with this on their own!
6) Be available if needed - While in 2nd grade, our children are gaining for independence, please be available to review their assignments with them before, during, and after they complete their homework. As the school year goes on, you can limit your oversight as the expectations and routines are more solidified.
As a Second Grader, we will have four daily homework assignments on most days. Please note: Homework will not begin until a few weeks in so we can get comfortable with our classroom.
Reading: Students will be assigned 15-20 minutes of reading each night. Students will need to write the Title of the Book and how many total minutes read at the bottom of their planner for each night. This can be independent, with a sibling, or as a family!
Spelling: Students will be assigned a spelling activity most nights. Each activity will use words that follow a certain spelling pattern that we are learning in school that week. Please note: The lists are not focused on the spelling words, but the SPELLING PATTERN. Example: play, pain, drain, ray would be words that practice the 'ai' and 'ay' spelling pattern.
Math: Students will be assigned a math handout from our Math program or other resources most nights.
Typing Agent: Later on in the year, students will be assigned 20 minutes per week of Typing Agent to practice their typing skills
As the adult or caregiver, please sign the bottom of their planner each night - which will tell me someone reviewed their homework and gave it the 'sign of approval'. Thank you!
