Our Math Curriculum is continuing with our transition to iReady Math. This will be the second year all grade levels are implementing iReady. Please read below for information on the curriculum and units to come in 2nd grade!
Another great resource, we use Xtra Math for math fluency. You can access this through your child's Clever account!
A typical unit of iReady is split up into Units. For Second Grade, there are 5 units. Each unit is then split into roughly 5-day lessons, which focus on a specific concept. Then, each lesson is split into individual sessions. Think of a session as what would be taught in a single day!
A session for iReady often follows the Try-Discuss-Connect model. Students start with a question for the day, where they are encouraged to "try" the problem without any formal, teacher-centered instruction. This is an exciting time where students can try lots of different strategies that make sense to them! After students try the problem, students then discuss with a partner about how they solved. The goal for this time is for students to become comfortable with supporting their math thinking and developing their overall math vocabulary. Partners share their strategies and see what similarities or differences there are within their work. Once partners have shared, we enter the connect portion of the lesson. We share as a group specific strategies that students used and show how it can be used in various practice problems.
Another important component to iReady is the online platform. Students will take a diagnostic online test three times throughout the school year - in the beginning, middle, and end of the year. From the diagnostic, students are given a personalized learning plan, known as their My Path. Students will receive problems and concepts that meet their needs. As they finish lessons, their My Path grows with them! Part of the online platform, students also have access to Fluency Flight, which aids in their math fact fluency. Your child can use the online iReady component any time through Clever!
