In this reading unit, we continue growing our reading muscles for fiction texts. This unit is a fun way to push our reading even further as we practice our strong reading voices, try out partner reading, and even create reading clubs, too!
In the first bend, we work on our reading voice by practicing reading fluently. We learn to develop a strong reading voice by rereading parts aloud and in our head, scooping words into longer phrases, talking like the character, matching the mood of the story, and reading with a 'just right' pace. During this bend, we also practice our fluency with a partner by rereading parts together to smooth out bumpy parts, talking like the characters, and discussing special language in our books.
In the second bend, we discuss literary language (anything special that an author uses that makes us feel, think, or wonder). Comparisons, imagery, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, and precise wording are all examples of literary language that can be used in our stories. We will practice noticing, rereading, and thinking about this special type of language, as well as asking ourselves what does this really mean.
For our last bend, we continue focusing on strategies to keep track of longer books. At this point in the year, students are often reading chapter books and are in need of strategies to help track the story. Students will use reading partners as one method and practice retelling and discussing their books. Other strategies include writing notes about what is most important in the chapter and when you get off track, reread and answer questions you may have.
During this unit, students will also join a reading club, where they create a plan, talk and work together to reach their reading goal. Now, that is some major reading power going on here!!
You can try these strategies out at home, too! Create your own partnership with your child and you... enjoy the partner reading!
