With the winter season in full swing, ice and snow are becoming weather to look out for. Whether you are driving or walking, these conditions can be tricky to navigate. A few of Hackettstown’s very own students shared their experiences with winter weather.
In one account, a junior student, Avia Vanpelt, discussed a close call with slippery ice. At the beginning of her regular route to school, she encountered ice coating the stairs on her porch. Luckily, with quick reaction time, she was able to avoid falling by grabbing the rails. When talking to Avia, she emphasized the importance of taking precautions to clear any ice or snow from pathways, stating, “When you’re inside, you’ll tell yourself, ‘it will be gone by tomorrow’ (...) no, no, shovel that slush!” In this case, it worked out for Avia, but others might not be as lucky; which is why it is so important to take the necessary precautions to ensure safe travelling.
Another junior student, Erin Lefeber, retold a major inconvenience ice caused her when getting ready to leave for school. As a new driver, navigating through snowy weather can be a pain. Erin discussed how she had to get ready an extra ten minutes early to heat up her car in order to remove the frost. This extra step may seem like a hassle, but it was crucial to her safety.
Her story is one of many, but it is important not to skip any steps when preparing for winter weather. Although they may seem inconvenient, it is essential to your comfort and safety. So for a safe holiday season, remember to watch out for snow and ice!
