The Southeast Asian country Myanmar experienced a 7.7 - 7.9 magnitude earthquake on the 28th of March, the deadliest earthquake since the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes. Tremors were experienced by China, Thailand, and Vietnam. The earthquake resulted in buildings and casualties of over 17,300 people in all affected territories.
The State Administration Council of Myanmar reported 65,096 houses and buildings, 2,514 schools, 4,317 Buddhist monastery living quarters, 6,027 pagodas and temples, 350 hospitals and clinics, 170 bridges, 586 dams and 203 sections of the Yangon–Mandalay highway were damaged. Over 100 billion US dollars worth of damage was estimated to have occurred by the USGS Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER).
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) expects aftershocks to continue for weeks, months, or even years. The following image, published April 2, 2025 by the USGS, is the magnitude of estimated aftershocks within the next week. There have been over 50 aftershocks near all affected territories since the Myanmar earthquake, with the most recent being a 4.4 magnitude earthquake 35 miles from Myanmar.
