Flowers bloom, birds sing, humidity sets in. The characteristics of spring begin to unravel as the days grow warmer and days become longer. For many people, though, these are only afterthoughts after hearing the word ‘spring’; for them, the first word that comes to mind is ‘sports.' March Madness recently ended, with an intense battle between the Houston Cougars and the victorious Florida Gators. Now high school and professional baseball, softball, track, golf, and lacrosse start.
Both the Hackettstown baseball and softball teams are coming out of their successful tournament in Myrtle Beach. The boys baseball team concluded as 15-7. Although the Hackettstown softball team started with a 1-5 record, the softball team has improved their record to 8-12. Three dominant wins with at least a nine-run lead has helped their chances at performing well in the HWS tournament. Moreover, junior Sarina Pangallo achieved one hundred strikeouts in her high school career.
The girls and boys track teams are both 5-0 overall, achieving back-to-back undefeated conference titles. The boys’ first meet against Hopatcong provided a 118-22 score in a dominant win, and they remain victorious against High Point with a score of 100-40 on April 8th. Since then, they have won against Lenape Valley, Jefferson, and Vernon. Similarly, the girls track team has won all five meets against the same opponents. The girls took a dominant win against Hopatcong, scoring 105-20. The boys 4x400m team competed at Penn Relays, one of the most well-known track meets in the world, on April 24th. The look forward to compete at New Balance Nationals on June 22nd, a huge feat and exciting meet.
The Hackettstown golf team is 3-16 overall and 0-8 in their conference.
The girls lacrosse team is currently 11-8. Junior Addison Fezenko recently achieved 100 career goals and 100 career points, and sophomore Lily DeJesus reached 100 career goals. Their strong presence on the field, as well as unity within the team, helped improve their strong season. The boys lacrosse team ended with 4-15.
