Every year, HHS presents a beautiful musical, and this year’s selection is Little Shop of Horrors! This musical is set in the 1960s in New York City; it follows Seymour Krelborn, a florist from the wrong side of town who nurtures a unique and bizarre plant that refuses to thrive. As he falls in love with his coworker Audrey, he faces the question: will this enigmatic plant lead to his fame or his downfall? Join us at HHS from April 10th to 13th to discover the answer!
The cast features Eli DiPaolo as Seymour, Natalie Cook as Audrey, Grace Bielski as Audrey II (the plant), James Scalera as Mr. Mushnik, and Derek Sandoval as Orin. Eli, a junior, is taking on the lead role and expresses his anticipation, stating he is “very nervous but looking forward to a successful show!” Fellow junior James Scalera, who is playing Mr. Mushnik, the flower shop owner, shares that he feels “challenged but honored” to take on the role. The remaining leading cast consists of seniors, each of whom has spent years dedicated to the theatre program! Their passion and enthusiasm for performing such an iconic show are palpable.
Mrs. Higgins, the director, and her assistant director, Sebastian Alpizar, a senior at HHS, have invested much of their time over the last few months to get the performance ready. The cast, crew, and janitorial staff have put in countless hours designing and building the set, which consists of the plant shop and parts of Skid Row. While the set may appear straightforward when compared to the dozens of set changes in last year’s Amélie, the set of Skid Row beautifully captures the essence of New York City’s rougher downtown. It utilizes muted colors and aging effects; this attention to detail enhances the world-building and the musical’s narrative.
Overall, the cast, crew, and pit are all very excited for the production and insist that it will be a great show! Be sure to check out Little Shop of Horrors at HHS on April 10th, 11th, and 12th, at 7 pm, and April 13th, at 2 pm.
