Language Institute Program Partners with the United States Army War College

This fall for the second year in a row, HACC has received the great honor of providing English as a Second Language (ESL) courses for the spouses of the International Fellows Program (IFP) participants at the United States Army War College (USAWC) located on the beautiful Carlisle Barracks. Each year, senior military officers from around the world are invited by the United States Army Chief of Staff to spend a year studying and researching at the USAWC. This year, 26 of the officers’ spouses, representing 26 different countries, are attending beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of ESL classes delivered by HACC Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division instructors, Deborah Blakeslee and Rebecca Shaw Sullivan. Congratulations to all involved in another success partnership.

Massage Therapy Students Return to Complete Program

Jan. 6, 2020 was not unlike any other class start for the massage therapy program. Twelve new students along with our eight massage program instructors and staff kicked-off the program with the usual “Gathering Circle” where everyone gets to know one another as they begin their 11-month journey to become massage therapists. Little did anyone know that only nine weeks later the COVID-19 pandemic would shutter all on-campus classes and these part-time, evening students would be given an opportunity to demonstrate their true commitment to the new profession those chose to pursue.

In less than three days, massage education specialist Sabrina Glennon and program coordinator Nina Kottcamp, with assistance from massage instructors Tracy Buikema, Katie Haunstein, Thomas Long, Michael Marini, Kari Pincin, and Cleo Royal, revamped the entire program and transitioned all instruction to Zoom or virtual learning, and the class continued for three months in these different learning environments.

On June 20, the class returned to the massage studio to begin practicing massage techniques on one another and on the instructors in order to meet the practical hours required by the massage therapy licensure board. Students were taught proper sanitization techniques and the studio was outfitted with the necessary supplies and equipment to keep everyone safe. Students don face masks, face shields, and aprons when performing massages, and the treatment rooms are sanitized between each massage following very prescribed and detailed procedures.

Each of these students deserve to be recognized for their ability to be flexible and upbeat during such a stressful time, and our massage instructors and staff have once again demonstrated their unwavering commitment to our students, as well as true dedication to their profession!

The January 2020 massage therapy class will graduate on Dec. 23, 2020, only two weeks later than originally planned when they began their journey. Healthcare Education is #HACCProud!
