Understanding of ice sheets and glaciers, planetary ice bodies, permafrost, river and lake ice = all aspects of frozen water and ground on earth and other planetary bodies
The cryosphere describes ice and snow bodies reaching from glaciers to ice sheets, frozen rivers and lakes but also the processes that take place inside and around ice and snow sheets e.g. distribution and deposition of snow and metamorphic processes. A considerable part of their research includes Climate Change and its effects on ice and snow.
Investigates processes that shape snow and ice in mountains and polar regions. --> deeper understanding of complicated mass and energy exchange processes. alos for predictions of future snow and ice in mountains and high latitudes
Cryosphere is part of climate system investigates with techniques from geophysics, meteorologie und hydrologie
The biggest, ground breaking arctic expedition, that was collaborated with several leading countries in climate research.

Role of snow cover on sea ice on the Antarctic. CRYOS has developed a new version of the "SNOWPACK" model which calculates the retrievals of total sea ice thickness using microwave sensors
Role of Wind in the energy turn-around
How can the winter gap of energy supply be reduced by installing wind generation in the mountains?
At the Princess Elizabeth Station in Antarctica, their main point of study is the loss of snow mass by sublimation. The scientists involved are trying to measure and give numbers to the vast amount of snow that sublimates from crystals into gas without melting. At this zero-emission station at the Southern Pole they also cover snow drift, katabatic winds and turbulences, wind systems that take place above ice sheets.
Huwald energetically stressed the already infamous finding that glaciers are receding, winters are becoming scarce of snow, ice sheets are melting, melting water is decreasing and concluded that an immediate action by politics, economy and industry as well as individuals is needed, that a fundamental change in society needs to happen to ensure the survival of animals, nature and our own. He indicated that photovoltaics have a high potential in mountainous areas as well as wind power plants to build a clean source of renewable energy that provides energy to fuel a sustainable future.
The only base with zero-emission on the Antarctic. The station, designed, built and operated by the International Polar Foundation, is the first polar base that combines eco-friendly construction materials, clean and efficient energy use, optimization of the station's energy consumption and clever waste-management techniques.
